new guy..bike 2 days old(to me)

Evening everyone!
Im Rod from York (UK)& until recently had an XT600e.
I have upgraded to an XT660Z and am up against it!
( im travelling to Western Sahara in 10 days & need to get some pannier frames for soft luggage. I admire the sw-motech frames, but as they are coming from Germany & its a bank holiday- im not sure they will arrive in time. I am sorted for a back plate & radiator guard from Alistair from Altech designs ...can anyone please recommend a company who might be able to help!...given the short period before departure!

Regards
Rod

Hi rod,
welcome to the forum what about some givi frame rails, and take the little
lugs off to stop them from rubbing on the soft panniers.Dont forget a trip
report and if it,s like the last one it will very entertaining.

Welcome Rod.

Try Winding Roads in Derby.....

http://www.windingroads.co.uk/shop/s...e5ecfdebd89e7b

They have SW stuff and may have what you need in stock, always worth a call.

Or there is a set of Touratech frames on ebay...........

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/XT660Z-Ten...item4192cc8120

If you don't have the bags yet you could try Giant Loop throw-overs, they work well on the XT660Z but do keep the weight rather high.

Also take a look at Zen Overland, they may offer something you like....

http://www.zenoverland.com/luggage.html

Good luck and have fun.

RodYork 06-04-15 20:49

well i'm here to stay! & have just paid the subscription to enable me to gain from the font of Kev ...which I hope I don't need.
I will be doing a trip report, but probably more in video format ( similar to the last one)...which may or may not appear in my signature.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z2yTtFPM7Xc

I will look at the for sale section & also have a look at GIVI racks...are they substantial?

:hello: and :welcome: to :660:

Please check your pm for a special welcome to the Xt Supporters.

If you need panniers in a rush, check out Metal Mule they are UK based and will offer a discount to all :660: members.

Here is their link

These people are cheap 84 euros for a pannier rack for the xtz,
http://hds.heavyduties.ro/yamaha/xt660/xt660r.html
They have been very quick in responding to questions from me.

RodYork 06-04-15 21:03

Thank you everyone!- Im on a budget ...as always!...would you say the Touratec frames will definitely fit a 2013 model XT660z

I will look at other suggestions Tonight & be hitting the phone Tuesday 9am!

OK...here is the fun part!...
will the DVLA get the V5 back to me before I leave ...who wants to start a sweepstake!

If I go with just the "new Keeper" portion...that is still likely to get me in (right)??

I have heard of these people also- thank you,,,,but I doubt they will arrive in time- alas!

Hi Rod,

Glad you found your way onto the forum! Some very helpful chaps on here. It's where I picked up all my tips and mod suggestions.

If those touratech frames come from a 2008 onwards xt660z then they'll fit your bike. Theres no change in the bike design since 2008 to present day (except the ABS version).

Hope the trip planning is going well and you are not running around too much...

Alistair

Hi RedYork
It seems you're up against it with only a week to go. hope you manage to source something asap.
Personally I wouldn't leave it to the last minute to fit racks; I'd want to give them a good test before undertaking a long trip. The last thing you want is a problem en-route and the luggage/boxes hanging off!
I've made a few trips to Southern Morocco with a cheap Rickman topbox on a rack and a small bag bungied onto the seat....more lightweight than racks.

Yep...
I was left with no option but to change steed; it was not an easy decision buying a bike that I have no knowledge on beyond owning an XT600e- there was a reason!

but trust me...this trip is going ahead..even if I have to walk it!

...I have had what I can only describe as a motorcycling miracle take place before my very eyes.

300 hundred miles & under 24hrs after posting this thread - I am the excited owner of
1.A tank bag
2.2 sets of tyres
3.Touratech racks
4.Filters (air & Oil)
5.Cush Drives
6.Bearings
7.Clutch Cable

The gentleman who "sold" me the kit- deliberately lowered his sale price...then started adding other kit( FREE!)...I originally went for the racks...
THIS HAS NEVER HAPPENED TO ME BEFORE and reaffirms my love of motorcyclists. The chaps name is Paul...you may have gathered he no loner has an XT660, but was on here under the user name of Geldof

...a truly helpful thoroughly nice guy- I hope I am able to offer similar help to others in the way he did!

Thank you everyone for your suggestions- particularly Sandman- you put me onto him- 24hrs later im back on track..but with a new list of "sort out before you go Rod"

Updates to follow!

Regards- 09 days
Rod

Yo Pleiades!

Pleiades 07-04-15 23:28

Sorry, bit late to the party welcoming you. Just got back from a few days touring in deepest, darkest Scotland where I blissfully had no wifi or mobile phone signal!

Hope you get everything sorted and your trip goes well.

That's the great thing about xt660.com Rod, there is always someone who knows about something you need, or a snippet of information that is eluding you.

As it happens I know Geldof but didn't realise they were his racks for sale. We rode together to Mongolia last year. Sounds like all of the luck was with you when you bumped into the Irishman, very generous of him.

All the best with your preparations.

Sandman.

Sniper is going...along with others & no points for guessing what im riding.
(im as new as you here)

If you read my previous posts- I have had a wondurful experience with the members here...Im sure it will continue with the bike!

I leave in 08 days & have just received a bash plate and a lowering kit along with panniers bought yesterday from Paul- Im awaiting the back plate & other bits...then its all hands to the deck!

Sandman 09-04-15 01:16

Hi Rod,

If you are lowering the bike watch out for the change in geometry in relation to the side stand angle. The Zeds are very tippy at the best of time and lowering reduces the lean angle making them very unstable on the side stand.

I've seen guys shorten the side stand by a good chunk, maybe an inch or so. It all depends on what other mods and weight has been added as it will all add up.

Might be a good idea to be ready to shorten if needs be.

I have just managed to procure a secondhand "sacrificial" side stand to modify when I put my 20mm lowering links on.

Sandman.
