I know you said you don't want A roads, but please don't discount the A93, Blairgowrie to Braemar and Ballater to Stonehaven will take you up through Scotland and the Cairngorms. Fantastic road.

Also, you could get lost between Aberdeen and Inverness for days!
Royal Deeside, the whisky trail... You'll have a great time!

You need to consider that using UCR's (Unclassified roads) will eat into your time. Also Scotland being mountainous means that getting around means taking in the only available roads, these are often A roads.

However, the Highlands is full of excellent A roads, many are unfenced (so free wild roaming animals) and have passing places (single track road with lay-byes to allow vehicle to pass).

Saying this to a Australian is a bit odd, but the Highlands are bigger than you would think, the roads meander and speed is difficult to maintain. Plan to average 40mph through the day (excluding stops) and you'll be about right.

Bring wet weather clothing...... mid September is often stormy in the Highlands, I go up there every year and out of the last 6 or so I've had one trip without a storm.
