Front fork bottom cracked when tightening allen key bolts

Hi guys,

I tightened the wheel axle bolt which runs through both shocks then lightly tightened the bottom two allen key bolts slightly and the corner bottom just below the allen keys broke off...

It seems it would unsafe to ride the bike like that or even to have it welded...?

This has happened before. It was a fairly common problem on early bikes. You can get this sort of damaged welded and repaired, I've seen it done. Personally, I don't think I'd ever quite have 100% faith in a weld though. Certainly if going down this route don't try it at home! Find someone who knows exactly what they're doing with cast aluminium alloys. Probably best to source a second hand leg?

Read this thread. It covers both welding and second hand options.

how meany bikes have a cast steering head / swing arm pivot secton
or swing arm linkage section welded to exstruded frame , arm members etc..

i use to build alloy offshore yachts.. we welded the cast boom pivot to
the mast... a 80ft yacht with main up & flying the kite can have a mast
loading of more than 40 ton..

welding is not a issue.. but as said it has to be done RIGHT...
