I would be interessted to know if your chain was tensioned too tight.
Get the carrier from that breakers if you can, cos if you don't I will!

I had a spare a few years ago when a mate was selling off a load of spares from an 'R'. I lent it to a mate who's chain had come off and scratched the alloy a bit. Silly b***er had a garage clear out and threw away a perfectly good but scratched part, I couldn't believe it.

I want a spare to have a go at boring out the mounting for a better bearing.
(I used to be a Toolmaker so I do know what I will be doing and how to do it.)

I can't figure why it failed so badly, the chain is new but I set the tension carefully and I'm on bikes 30 years so you'd think I knew what I was doing. I checked both bearings for play and the bearing remnants were well greased when i took it all apart.

I'll let you know one way or another about the carrier from the breaker when i ring him this morning.

I'll be quite honest I've never seen an outside race fracture like that.......................and I've had bikes for over, er well, a very long time now!:eusa_whistle: (40+yrs!)

I watch with interest when you get it apart and try to conclude why it went pop.

I've got the spare from that breaker and it came with the sprocket and cush rubbers. Top result!

I'll clean all the broken bits later to see if i can find a reason for the failure and I'll reassemble it with the chain at the same tension to make sure i set it right last time before i adjust it again.

Don't think the sprocket is going to be any use though as Phil fitted a 525 kit to your bike.

the way the outer bearing race broke then took the
carryer out....
I'm wonder what the "c" rating of the bearing is ?
If it's a 1 or 2 it would/could over heat & lock up..

the "C" rating is the clearance of the race to balls...
should be at least a C4 for high load / speed grease lubed...

all just a thought... right or wrong...

I replaced the chain and sprockets with a standard 520 set, the 525 kit was shot. Having blasted the bike up through France, made the ferry with 11 minutes to spare and caning it home on the Monday so I could get to work Monday afternoon, it threw the chain a half mile from my house when the split-link opened itself.

I think the Sahara sand had eaten it. I don't see the benefit of the 525 unless it is a serious high end kit with a Scottoiler and you need the extra drive. The kit I took off was JT, was in bad need of being boiled in diesel to clean it and I wasn't bothered to risk another failure. And then this happened.... Oh well

Well that's a double result then!

I'm beginning to Petenz is onto something... The way the casting has broken away together with the crack in the outer race would suggest that the bearing may have suffered overheating? This perhaps caused the race to expand and brake the carrier? Or it could just be the sand again!

Just purely out of interest, what was the reason that XTR ended up at the breakers - electrical, mechanical, crashed or stolen?

The XTR in the breakers was bought new by a born-again biker and he had rear ended a wall with it and put himself in hospital with minor injuries. His mother forbade him from riding it and it was sold to the breaker on condition it wasn't put back on the road. It needs a fork leg, front rim, lhs tank plastic panel and a tidy up since its been laid up for four years.

I was offered the bike as a complete restoration project last year for €1500 and turned it down on the basis that I wanted an xtz. D'oh...

It hasn't been broken up yet - the breaker is planning stripping it and putting it on his ebay shop shortly.
