Mitas any good?

As you can see from my long term report i'm currently running Maxxis C6006's at the mo, but i'm surprised how quick they seem to wear, i'm considering giving Mitas a go once i've killed the Maxxis.

The tyres i'm looking at are the C02 the E09 and E10, also which front compliments these? i'm attracted by the price and hopefully they will last a little longer in terms of mileage.

I'll freely admit the bulk of my riding is commuting, but i want something that can get me through snow, and when i do go off road it's fairly packed dirt/sand with boggy bits, gravel track, and woodland.

I have been using Mitas tyres for around 5+ years now on few different bikes. First time was moving from Heidenau K60 to E07s on my Transalp - found they were the best tyres I had on the bike, long lasting, predictable, OK in wet and good enough along tracks round here in Kerry. Then I had a couple of sets of E08s on my 1150GS they're very like the Tournces but better! And cheaper... Back to E07s on the XTZ now - just changed them today and that's another plus is they are not too bad to change (unlike the Karoo that came off). You may find E07s will do for your needs the E09 and E10 are more aggressive and may not be so great for commuting with vibration and noise? Don't know for sure as I haven't used them though.
Worth a go anyway - they're reasonably cheap and you may be delighted with them!

Simon 09-11-14 14:01

I hadn't considered the 07's so cheers for that suggestion chris i will look into them a bit more, initial price checks look good.

Ohlins 09-11-14 15:27

I'm on my third set of Mitas E07's....I get great wear from them as I ride hard...they're very good on wet tarmac. They last really well on stone hard pack and resist cuts and tears. The K60's I've seen on the same routes and on the same terrain get cut to bits. Would not buy based on my observations.

I'll buy another pair of E07's again next.

I think I got 16k kms on my last pair from memory.

:)

Well just to be sure the E07s are up to the job I took a little test ride today ;-).

Great tyres, wouldn't have anything else!

Simon 10-11-14 20:39

Ohlins, i like the sounds of the mileage your reporting.

Chris your a very lucky man having routes like that near to you.

Pleiades 10-11-14 20:50

Some really positive comments here.

Interestingly, a good few years ago, I was contemplating buying some Mitas E-07s, but then I read this and ignored them ever since.

Funny how opinions on tyres vary so wildly.

Maybe I should give them a second look?

Tyres seem to be very personal - to me the E07s were a revelation after having used Trailwings, Contis, Heidenau K60s and Tourances on my Transalp. I got to hate Tourances after having bad experiences with them on the Transalp and 1150GS but reading various forums they seem to be very popular... and there are people who like Trailwings! At least with Mitas tyres they're not too expensive to try - you might love them!

God's own county, Simon. ;-)

Simon 10-11-14 21:49

They do come across as a love/hate brand.

I moved over the the XT earlier this year after years on road bikes and to be fair this time of year i could spin up a road tyre just as easily as i can the Maxxis i have now.

you look on a off road forum and they tend to love the more agressive Mitas.

this guy certainly is enjoying the 07's

Peronally i'm sold, once i've finished off my current tyres i'll be giving the 07's a go.

I've family north of the border chris, so that looks a good excuse to pop over.

Simon 10-11-14 22:03

well if anyone else is watching, a quick look around and i'm finding them in the uk for around 80 for a pair delivered.

SiKa 11-11-14 13:21

I had 1 pair of E-9 and i was not impressed.. Front tyre was a pain in wet muddy conditions since it did not clean it self at all, but on gravel roads and tarmac it worked quite well..

Now i have gone through approx. 10 rear C-02 and 5 front C-21 tyres and im more than happy with the tyres and would recommend those if you mostly ride gravel and offroad.. On tarmac a new C-02 is really wobbly but it gets better after 3-500km :D

Temagogrod 12-11-14 02:28

I fitted a 130/80 E09 rear and combined it with a 90/90 Pirelli Scorpion Rally on the front of my '09 XTR.

I replaced Tourances and was largely happy with their performance. Although the rear was just legal after 7600km's. Now that the Pirelli is scrubbed in the current combination is as good as the Tourances on the tar. The bike is used to commute in rural Australia (a portion of the commute is on gravel), so the roads, even though sealed, can be jarring. I haven't had any moments in the wet and once out of town generally cruise around 115-120 km/h. Kangaroos present as a bigger concern.

In the bush (forestry that is a mix of rock/hard pack, gravel and some sand) I can't fault this combination. Although, I am yet to experience some genuinely muddy conditions. At 100kg+ on a 200kg bike it's not something I seek out. I have a WR for that.

Perhaps, they do cause additional vibration, but, with the Dominator exhaust and the motor thumping away, it's not really something that would convince me to go back to road oriented tyre.

The pricing is interesting. Here in Australia I paid $179 for the E09 and $149 for the Pirelli. Fitting was extra, so I fitted them without any problem.

I have been impressed enough by the Pirelli to check out fitting the 150/70 rear. But I reckon $270+ in Australia is just a touch too much.

Some pics of the tyres here http://www.xt660.com/showthread.php?t=23027

Simon 17-11-14 10:05

Chris what presure are you running?

ChrisHX 17-11-14 13:58

I have them at around 30 psi (2.1 bar) maybe a bit more on back.

Simon 18-11-14 14:14

well I've just ordered myself a set of E07's so once I've killed off the maxxis I will also do a review on them to keep everyone informed.

I have an E07 in the shed but my TKC80 just refuses to give up that last mm of wear!! Read very good reports and cheap in comparison.
Matt.

mindbane 18-11-14 21:57

waiting for your reviews :)

mb4807 19-11-14 08:21

I rode on E07's in Morocco for a week on a hire bike and liked them. When my current K60 Scout rear wears out I am going to fit the Mitas.

assenvas 19-11-14 21:43

I replaced this spring with E07 and can say I am impressed. The tyres were very stable with good grip from the very beginning (to my surprise). Very good in wet, great grip on tar, good on gravel, mud is not so good but you should not expect that from this tyre. Although I had a scary ride in very sticky and slippery clay like mud and can say the tyres saved the drop on few occasions.

Worth every penny.

Simon 21-11-14 19:52

Well they've turned up today, not unpacked them as i'm working nights at the mo and the misses wanted them out of her way.

Did have a quick look, and the tread looks nice and deep, there is a centre line a few mm below the intial tread depth which should stabalise tyre wear after a while.

The website i got them from listed them as mud and snow rated but i'll know for sure once unpacked, if that is true then thats a bonus.

Now there's the when to fit them, the maxxis still have a good 6+mm left on them, but i'm not to happy wasting it on road miles. so i will likely fit them shortly but i'll get specs etc for the proper review.

SiKa 01-01-15 22:42

Next set of Mitas ;)

Simon 04-01-15 19:20

Now thats some serious rubber lol.

Is that the CO2 front and rear?

SiKa 04-01-15 20:46

If i remember correct the front is Mitas XT444 with 270 studs and read is C-02 with 285 studs.

Now just waiting for more snow and more ice on the lakes.

Wow what a great looking spot. I wanna come and play :-)

I really like my tourances on the tarmac but they really don't like any kind of dirt, looking forward to hearing how you get on with the Mitas Simon.

EO7 trial

Pretty happy with the EO7 so far..... Had only been doing road since fitting so thought I would test it out on the world famous Western Australian ball bearing gravel and I'm impressed. Hooked up as good as the TKC80 and never felt loose, yet to try wet. Hope the mitas is as good as the TKC80 was in the wet...that tyre is unbelievable in the wet for a knobbly. http://i317.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps00qqyvdo.jpg

Simon 10-01-15 08:24

Well it's nearly that time, the Mitas are going on next friday. weather is rubbish here atm so i'll have a local garage fit the tyres as the driveway is my workshop and i don't fancy doing it myself outside in pouring rain and gale force winds.
