How can you tell if your speed is right ?

Hey

How can you tell if your speedo is giving out the speed on the XTX

Was heading home from work stuck it in to first give it a slight Rev nothing major and it seemed to send the speedo read out up then bck down :S ?

Cheers in advance

To check speedo accuracy you could...

Use a GPS for comparison?
Follow a mate in a car/on a bike?
Time yourself over a measured distance at a constant indicated speed?
Stick your bike on a rolling road?
Find your local community speedwatch's SAM and ride through it?
Go too fast through a speed camera? ;)

Or, do you mean, how do you check the speed sensor output in the diagnostic mode?

Lol must try all of the above ...... Also how do Ya do that last one ? :)

Pleiades 01-11-14 18:52

You need to run diagnostic test D07 (road speed sensor).

Enter the diagnostic mode:

Switch off Engine Run switch & switch OFF key ignition
Press both SELECT & RESET buttons and then switch ON key ignition
Keep SELECT & RESET buttons pressed for at least 8 seconds
Display then changes to "DIAG"
Release SELECT & RESET buttons
Select DIAG (not CO) by pressing again both SELECT & RESET buttons.
Select D07 by pressing SELECT (up) or RESET (down).

The D07 test display should read 000 and then as you spin the rear wheel it should count the pulses sent to the ECU and display a running total. Basically, if it counts uniformly upwards, you're good to go.

Just bear in mind, the speedo on all XTs with stock gear ratios and tyre sizes is between 8 and 10% optimistic.

BTW - The speed camera test in my first post isn't as good as the others because you'll have to wait a week to ten days for the results! ;)

Did the diag test and it started at 0 and went up ..... Would I be rite in saying that the speedo reads of the crank not off the wheels ?

Pleiades 01-11-14 19:43

From the gearbox.

The reason your speed suddenly went up and then settled... Could it be you spun the rear wheel momentarily?

Was at a stand still when it happened but the clutch was just slightly off the bit point

What are the teeth on the front sprocket like?

XT Donkey86 02-11-14 11:59

They are still gd only fitted in July

I read in the Hayes manual that the diag should count up to 199 then go bck to zero ? Is that rite ?

Is does on the Tenere in diagnostic mode DO7, not sure about on the R/X, although I can't see why it would be any different? Does the counting process happen where the speedo would normally be displayed?

XT Donkey86 05-11-14 22:28

Yeah counts it up on the speedo screen I'm going to replace the sensor got one eBay that was going cheap :P

Well in that case 199 would seem likely to be the limit before it resets to 0 as that's the biggest number the LCD segments will allow on the speedo.

XT Donkey86 05-11-14 23:32

Mine went up to 999 then reset lol

XT Donkey86 05-11-14 23:53

Oooooo wait wait my bad it counts it in the bottom corner beside D07 lol said to my dealer ( of motorbikes) ;P he said it could be moisture so spent time the day cleaning the connections up :) baby steps I'll get it sorted

On the plus side I can never be done for speeding if the speedo is running faster than I'm actually doing lol

I don't understand? Are you sure the counting goes on in the area of the dash where the speed normally is displayed, bacause that cannot read any higher than 199? :102:

It's quite possible the R/X do read to 999, but surely it would have to be displayed elsewhere on the dash? Trip display? Odo display?

Sorry, I'm just being inquisitive now! ;)
