New Tax Disk Regulations, The Good, The Bad & The Ugly Rip Off.
So as from the 1st of October 2014 you no longer need to display that ugly tax disk. GOV says they’ve saved the tax payer 10m by not issuing disks they saved the equivalent of a Tanks weight in paper. Which is good as some may say. The bad is that when you buy a vehicle the current tax does not come with it and the seller automatically gets a refund when the V5 gets updated. You, the new registered keeper now have the option to sorn it, or buy new tax cover by using the 12 digits on the green slip. And so we come to the Rip Off, commonly known as extortion. You buy the vehicle mid month or even later. Not only does the seller lose his last months refund value, you also lose those weeks (however many it may be) in value. Minimum sorn locks the bike for 5 days by the way. I have checked with the police and there is a loop hole. If you use the vehicle to get it home and they scan you it will still show up as taxed. I even checked my bike online and it still says it is taxed, and will do until they update the V5, yet I am still not allowed to use it on a public road. Having spoken with the DVLA today I was told I cannot tax the vehicle for the 1st of November until that actual date, any attempt to tax prior to this and I will have to lose all of October. It can take up to 4 weeks to get the V5 done and up to six weeks to get a refund. So by having any vehicle off road and not declaring it sorn you may well face a letter from them where you will need to reply giving details as to why it was not taxed or sorn for a week or more etc. Well done GOV, you’ve really stitched up the honest tax payer.
