I fitted a a Gammatronix LED charge indicator for exactly the same reason. Early warning is better than no warning!

I am fitting a voltage meter on my tenere to prevent the next disaster... I just limped to work off the motorway when my Reg/rec let go; ( or more precisely the connector...)

Seems very poor its not integrated into the dash as standard, how hard could it be?? f@@kers!!

Maybe not a meter, but there's certainly a strong case for an OE fitted charge warning light though.
