Hi there, Tenere pickup this Saturday :-)

Hi all

Pete from the Gold Coast, sold my 2011 BMW G650GS on the weekend and just done a deal on a 2011 XT660Z with 2,000km on it.

It's not the colour I wanted but it's very nice and has Barkbusters, skid plate, engine bars and centre stand which is what I would have had to buy anyway.

I'm 47 and only been riding 6 months, bike is a little tall for me but I love them so I'll deal with it :glasses2:

Enjoy the new steed and please let us know how your experience pans out. Welcome to the BEST site you can find.

Nice

Very nice too.
You should find her way more reliable and capable than your old BMW 650 and cheaper to run.
Dont forget its only a 20 minute job to fit lowering links if the height still bothers you . A little bit would need to be cut off your sidestand and rewelded if lowering more than 15mm and your centre stand would need a bit more ooommph to engage it afterwards but all work well.

Well, she's finally mine...

May 2011 (Spain) build, 2,183km on the clock, bought from a guy in Brisbane who felt he was too short for the bike, looked after it so well he basically slept with it (never been ridden in the rain!) and it is pristine.

Nice one same color as mine

Time spent without rod in hand is time forever wasted.

Nice , looks very similar to the tenere I'm picking up on Tuesday...will be my 3rd :) should never have got rid of the other 2 . The best all rounder out there

Schnidely 07-09-14 01:01

Nice Pete, I like the black. Was that you the other day riding through Murwillumbah?

Nelso 07-09-14 10:03

No Schnidely, not me, only got it yesterday

Nelso 07-09-14 10:17

First impressions:
  • I found out it has a Lust Racing 25mm lowering kit so it is not too bad to mount and get a foot down when stopping. Will see how I go and decide whether I leave them on
  • Comfy seat, I like the riding position a lot
  • Great weather protection, rode through a bit of rain and didn't really get wet
  • Feels lighter than it is, until you stop that is - feels like my old KLR
  • Cockpit is good, instruments easy to read and right there in front of you
  • Fuel gauge is inaccurate? Showed one bar remaining but I only got 14 litres into it??
  • With a full tank I didn't really notice the extra weight
  • The throttle is twitchy, annoys me a lot
  • 1st gear too high? Gearing good otherwise, lopes along nicely
  • Weird buffeting on my helmet. I have an AGV and people say the visor vibrates which I hadn't noticed on previous bikes, but holy crap now I do. Don't know what to do about that one - makes 100km/h speeds and greater really uncomfortable

Last but not least, I've had three thumpers now - KLR, BMW G650GS and this one and this one is BY FAR THE WORST for vibration. It's terrible. I am concerned enough about it to ask you guys is this normal? It's bad from around 3k RPM, then again about 5k RPM. I might check with a dealer to see if there is anything I can do. It does have Barkbusters so I'm wondering if the lighter weights don't help.

Anyhow, I like the good things about it and if the vibiness can be improved I could see myself touring on this for hours at a time.

Cheers

Pete
Fuel gauge is fine, you just get a huge reserve amount of at least 100k's.

Look in the mod section to find out how to better tune your bike. This will help reduce twitchy throttle and vibrations. Also cushion drive mod will help.

Gearing down will help with high first gear and still allow a reasonable hwy speed.

Lots of possible solutions on this site for buffeting. I found repositioning by tilting the whole screen back has given the best results. I truly believe it's too upright.

Good luck, get sorted, and see you on the road.

Schnidely 07-09-14 10:42

Bl##dy auto correct, should have read cush drive not cushion.

Nelso 07-09-14 13:39

Thanks again Schnidely, I know nothing about mechanical stuff and wouldn't have a go at these things. Would a Yamaha dealer do the fuel mapping and cush drive mods? Do you know a bike mechanic that would do them for me?
I would like to try lowering the front forks by 10mm too while the lowering links are on.

Cheers
Pete

Schnidely 07-09-14 13:55

Any bike mechanic will help you at a cost which makes them 'not so cheap' mods. The mods are very straight forward. A layman can do them with the right approach. And once you're done you will feel more of a connection with the bike.
Any probs along the way and the forum guru's are there for support.

Schnidely 09-09-14 08:33

Hey Pete, I have the B & B rack which is aussie made and fairly cheap, about $90 from memory.
You're welcome to come on down to m.bah and check out my mods. We could drop your front end while you're here...easy job.

Nelso 10-09-14 13:30

Hi Schnidely, that sounds like a great offer. How about Saturday mid-morning or late afternoon? PM me your number and I'll give you a call.
