I originally had an '08 model and it was the very first to have this problem. The bike got nicked and I got an identical '09 model. The first thing I did was to chop off that connector and hard solder a reg / rectifier off a fazer. My reg is now mounted underneath the headlight as the fazer reg has about 300mm of loom actually potted into it.
Those pins are too small for the job and it's usually the earth pin that overheats and distorts the whole connector.
