Oil Cooler for Tenere
Has anyone fitted an oil cooler to a Tenere?
I know you can get one for the R from OTR - a neat looking piece of kit - but it wont fit the Z as it is fitted to the left hand side of the engine - just where the Tenere's exhausts are routed. Is there an aftermarket kit available? I thought of fitting a small 115mm x seven row cooler under the headlamp. It's just my bracket fabrication skills may not be up to it.... Any ideas? |
Why would you install an oil cooler, it doesnt need one imho? It is liquid cooled and does a mighty fine job, haven't heard of overheated engines, even in Marocco's heat? So again, why would you?

I agree with Dallas....I have been to Maroc several times and have suffered no ill effects without an oil cooler.....I scoot about here and in Spain in up to 30c temps also.....but...each to their own in the quest for little add ons and improvements. If you do end up mounting one I'd like to see pictures and an article!
You could have a peep at an XR 400 oil cooler that wraps around the front headstock. It is a simple affair and just might work. You could also look at the ones that come out of a Citron 2CV and see if the unions could be adapted? These are dinky compact units and may work if you can route the oil feeds? Maybe it could be mounted close to the headstock well out of harms way also? Good luck in your quest. :) . |
Last year some friends and I went to Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey, Bosnia, Serbia etc from the UK on 2 XT-Rs, a 1995 Triumph Tiger and a modern KTM.
The temperatures were very high (38 deg in Bulgaria), the bikes loaded and working through the Sofia traffic! Fans were running a lot. To the extent one of the XT fans died, they are only based on 20% constant running so the heat was too much. My old Triumph coped ok, the KTM's fan ran nearly all the time. Whilst I accept the XT cooling system is fine generally we wanted this time to have a little "extra" cooling capacity, to help when the temp needs bringing down. The problem for the Ten is there's nowhere to put a cooler! So the problem sorts itself out there and then! I'm fitting a temperature gauge just for peace of mind. I have had temp problems especially with high humidity.

Whilst granted it amy not be much use concerning the Ten initially, bear with me here.
I fitted a cooler to the SR I built, and as space was short I placed it toward the back of the bike in front of the mud shield but in plenty of air. http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_x32qR39vo3...0/IMG_0522.jpg It worked well, so placing one in an slightly unusual place on the Ten cold be an option? There's not much space around the headstock but what about on the side between the expansion tank and rear frame loop? Move the expansion tank somewhere? |
