Occasional Clunk from front brake
Had my 2009 XT660X for a year now, great fun bike then suddenly and occasionally there is a clunk when initially applying the front brake at the start of a ride but only at low speed and then nothing for a couple of days and then it happens again.
Has anyone experienced this before and knows a solution? Cheers :googly[1]: David |
Occasional Clunk from front brake
Nothing to worry about. More often than not, this sort of clunk is caused by the pads moving slightly in the calipers.
It is particularly common if you wheel your bike backwards to get it out of the shed/garage and use the front brake. The pads shift forward on the pin/retainer groove. As soon as you set off on your ride and apply the brake, the pads clunk backward the other way into their "normal" position. Often this clunking is more pronounced with old/worn pads, or worn pad retaining pins. A bit of grease on the retaining pin can damp the noise down too. Just to be sure though, check all the disc and caliper bolts for the correct torque. Oh, BTW - Welcome to XT660.com David! ;) |
Fazzer 1000 does the same thing.

i can confirm my bike has done the clunk at start of journey since i owned it from new and it was decided it due to i have to wheel my bike backwards and down a step to get out my garage so most time i grab a handfull of brake as back wheel rolls out garage before mirrors catch on the small doorway so then pads need to reseat when i start going forwards
