New year new idea...

Hello all and a happy new year to one and all.
I'm a biker of 20+years and even after a near death RTA 2 years ago still enjoy my bikes. I've got too many (wife's words not mine) but I'm thinking of an xt660x.
I bought a DRZ400 recently for my son for when he passes his next test and whilst I'm a huge Suzuki fan I find the little DRZ a bit to "revvy" for me and I stumbled upon the xt660 idea.
I'm not in a major rush to buy so I will keep looking but my ask would be from current owners of the 660 is what do I buy?
Is there any major difference in production years? Is mileage important? what ones do I avoid and so on? I've read bits about the tuning mods and so on but before I part with my cash I'd like to know what I should be looking out for? My XT would be purely for pleasure. Ride outs with my son and so on. I'm not a super speed demon and don't need to have the latest 1g weight saving speedo cable and the likes just a bike that will plod on and accept me being in charge of maintenance.

Many thanks in advance for any tips and hints that might be shared.

Hi mate,

Happy New Year! Welcome to the forum.
Couple of things from me to answer your questions:
if you will be using the bike predominantly on-road and as you say "for fun" then get the x, you will love it
if you plan some green laning or moderate off roading get the R
the Z is as good bike where the main advantage is the big tank but if you do not plan round the world trip you will not need it as it is around 20 kgs heavier than the R
regarding reliability and milage - do not worry, no reliabilty problems and the engine should last at leat 60-70 k miles
hope this helps.
Enjoy it is great fun.

javahouse 02-01-14 13:21

Hi
I bought an R and enjoyed it so much on tarmac that I bought a X.
Didn't like the X. Too responsive and too uncomfortable (for me) so sold it and still ride and love the R (99.9% tarmac)

I would like to try a Z, but like a lot of others here, I have a transalp which although not exciting, is dependable.

Re the X and comfort... I found the seat too narrow and the bars too viby.

:006: Welcome on board mate.

theodoric 02-01-14 20:11

Whoops. Too late.

Well from "thinking about it" to "buying one" took less than 48hrs A new record for me I think? Just bought an XT660X. 08 plate with 12k miles 2 previous owners and the only "mods" are a sump guard and lever covers. Everything else is 100% standard. Now all I have to learn is how this fuel mod works I've read about and deciding what cans she's going to be wearing!! No idea how I add a photo so I can't show you all. Needless to say I've got to cross the hurdle of getting it from Brighton to Southampton first then I can start to play.

Unless you're planning on doing airbox/intake mods in the near future, you may be better starting off with the O2 Controller first? You'll see instant benefits.

Just sign up to an image hosting site (such as Photobucket, Flickr, Dropbox etc) , upload your pictures, then click on the "insert image" button when creating your post and paste in the direct link (address) to the hosted image you want to display. We can all then get to see your lovely new XTX!

Works well for me, well done that's a tidy bike! We call that particular model the Scooby because of the gold wheels and blue colour scheme was similar to the Subaru Impreza aka Scooby :D

HCR 02-01-14 23:06

Well done! Quicker than me as well ;)

I joined a few days before you and haven't even got round to looking at one yet - that all changes on Sunday though :D

theodoric 02-01-14 23:09

My son said the same thing regards the Scooby. I just like it because it's different. I found lots with black wheels but very few with gold so I went with the gold choice.

I didn't really meant to buy one this quick, it just kind of fell into place. Right time, right seller, right condition and so on. I'm a big girls blouse and won't even consider riding in this weather so I've got a while to "play" in the man cave before she gets her maiden outing.

HCR 02-01-14 23:31

Forgot to add - looks like a real beauty too!

weeksy 03-01-14 08:37

Good work.... that's a quick decision :) I approve of logic like this.

Gerry58 03-01-14 10:27

Well done. I bought mine 37000km ago on a whim and never looked back. This forum is full of good info and nice people willing to share and help.

Enjoy and keep safe on the road :-).

Papa de Fago 03-01-14 10:48

Welcome and congratulations the new bike! I much prefer that shape of side panel to the big triangle on my XTR. I've been contemplating modifying mine but I think the exposed expansion tank would probably look worse. Looks like only the X had that treatment from 2008?

theodoric 04-01-14 12:49

I still love my bikes and think it was hitting that Nissan that nearly killed me. Not my love of being on a bike in the warm weather so I'm still into my bikes. Having additional metal parts in my bones means the newer style sports bike are a no go but I've still got a '93 GSXr1100WP. She was going to be sold to make room for the XT but I couldn't bring myself to do it. Now I've got...."a few" bikes.(5) MY wife says you can't ride several bikes with only one arse! but my reply of "you can't wear several pairs of shoes with only 1 pair of feet seems to have fallen on deaf ears!!

Sitting on my hands...

My XT660 was delivered an hour ago...woo hoo. :love7:I am now officially an XT owner. I have 1 problem. How long do I have to sit on my hands for please Mr Weather man? I soooo want to tinker with the spanners and start making it "mine" but it's throwing it down with rain here and I don't want to stand my little 350LC outside whilst I play in the shed. So I'm sitting on my hands trying to avoid temptation. Is this normal?

supatrig 04-01-14 19:57

Buy another shed, a man can never have to many sheds!

Your right there. Trouble is I've no more room in the garden. It's 40% man cave as it is!! Any bigger it will mean I physically won't be able to get the bikes out to ride.

Oldandwornout 08-01-14 23:27

Do what I do, use somebody else's ! Or sell the Elsie to me (used to race a 250 many moons ago)

I can't sell my LC. It was my "physio and rehab" after my accident in 2011. Spent a bit too much on her to not enjoy her for a few more years. Only done about 100 miles since she was "accidentally" rebuilt. I only meant to clean a few bits then use her but a clean bit next to a dirty bit didn't look right so that bit got cleaned then the next bit and so on....

Before the clean....
http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psfe6b4748.jpg

After the clean and a few too many pennies... Whoops.
