xt660 97 raptor carb convertion help
 

hi im new to this I have a xt 660 97 and I hve put raptor carbs on it. it will only rev half way then backfires. do I need to set them up cheers

Firstly :welcome: to XT660.com

As for your carbs - did you clean them fully before fitting them? They're notoriously troublesome if the they get any muck or old tarry fuel deposits in them. Particularly the small filter screen under the float valve needle.

You will need to set them up. Float level, pilot air screw (3 turns out) and most importantly the point at which the secondary carb starts to open.

Check all the hoses are connected and you haven't got any vacuum leaks. If the carbs have been standing dry for any length of time the diaphragm in the secondary CV is quite likely to have perished (or become unseated) which can cause exactly the symptoms you describe.

To be fair though, while always happy to help (had a 97 xtz myself once), you're probably better of searching out either, www.tenere.co.uk or www.mzriders.com forums as they are dedicated to bikes with the carb fed 5-valve XT engine. We're more about the water-cooled fuel injected XT models from 2004 on.

well i race long track on mablethorpe beach. i have a xt 660 engine in a tt600 frame. high comp wiseco piston, stage 2 hotcam. szr front pipes with track mega phone rear can. original carbs keep seizing up and breaking the connector rod. so iv converted it to raptor carbs. i change the manifolds and they fit fine. engines are the same. my cam and piston are out off a raptor. it res half way then dies and backfires loud. i have changed the cdi. i didnt know if i needed to set the carbs up different cherers:read2::disgust::popcorn2:

i may hae found the problem the top cam gear. the rivvits hae com loose and one weight has come off. getting bit from yammy in the morning :sbike:
