Engine / Crash Bars recommendation
 

Hi to all, first of all I want to introduce myself, my name is Fernando and I have just bought a used XT660Z and wanted to ask for your opinions regarding the best (more protective) engine/crash guards available.
I have the original Yamaha bash plate. I have seen Givi, SE Motech, OTR and a couple more bars.
Which would you recommend?

Bash plate from adventure spec UK is the best one. 220 pounds but it is perfect bash plate

I think that the engine bars are a very mixed blessing.

On a road bike they are ok and I bought some for my XT660X recently, I bought the Givi bars. I have not yet fitted them for two reasons: 1. You cannot have both the sump guard AND the engine bars fitted together without making some severe mods to the sump guard, which would of course weaken it, and 2. The engine bars fit to the engine mounts, and I am not so keen. I bought them so that I could fit my extra driving lights, but I am having second and third thoughts.

Also note that if you will off road, these engine bars add width to your bike and that is often a major problem and can mean your bike will catch on trees or whatever you are passing so a slim bike is a major advantage. My Beta 200 trials bike is ultra slim and I would never fit any engine bars, as it is designed to fall over without damage (and I have tested this aspect many many times hehehe).

I'm going for this one....It protects the water pump housing and the stator cover also.. The other don't seem to very well.

Also have the adventure spec bash plate on my XTR. Is the best bash plate I have seen compare the other ones.

That style is good.... I have a B&B plate with the
Yamaha ten engine bars.. a few mods were required
to the ten bars to get them to fit the XTR...

What worries me is the coolant reservoir that look quite fragile.

+1 for this and I am combining it with the Touratech upper engine bars that should protect the coolant reservoir.

Apparently they need slight modification to fit with the AS crashbars. Havent fitted them yet but have a read of Barcelona Pat's experience of this combo @

I have used my z off road a lot. I have high sided at speed, I have dropped it on rocky ruts and in many other situations. Every time it's me who has come off worse. Keep your leaver bolts loose so they twist rather than snap or bend and the bike will be fine excepting the odd scratch. There really is no need for large amounts of additional protection in my opinion. That said I have the Yam guards and bash plate. I have seen bikes damaged by the frame put in place to protect them more than once before. All that said, it each to his or her own. However the money saved on not buying a pricey set of bars will cover a large part of a good trip.

No. Your exhausts are in the way, but welcome to the forum buddy.

My XTZ had a Metal Mule aluminium bash plate that eventually split right along the bend, it held up with a few zipties for a while, but it was probably time to fit a new one.

Adventure Spec seem to do a nice plate, pretty heavy (which is a good thing, right?) easy enough to fit, will have to see how it fairs on the rocky lanes around here (the Lakes)
