Locky's XT660Z

I thought i'd start a thread about my XT660Z that i picked up yesterday . I've already got the tank off to just give it a clean and do a few small jobs but over the next few months it'll be renewing all the fluids , looking at the calipers ,valve clearances , and adding various bits and mods . I'll also be giving it a engine service (maybe next week if i get time) .
I'll be using it offroad after the winters out the way , so need to add various things like a tool tube etc etc
I'll add some pics along the way (folk love pics) so you can see what i'm doing and maybe put me right :) .
Here's the first few pics , one of the bike posing and one with the tank off ..

Tank off to see what it all looks like and gave it a good clean with WD40 and loads of rags ..
Just thought i should add that it's a 2009 model and its done 13400 miles .

Did you get that beauty off of eBay, I looked at that one...

I remember the blue bash plate....

Very nice mate...

Has it been Kev modded yet ?

First thing to do IMHO...

Locky 20-10-13 20:10

Yes it was the same one you seen on ebay . No Kev mods yet .

maxwell123455 20-10-13 21:46

hmmm nice

Great, you are in for a treat....

I'd run it like it is for a good few weeks and then do the mods so you can really feel the difference across the entire bike.

:bravo:

Looks great in blue!!!

Locky 21-10-13 20:06

Gibbo1974 , as for engine mods all i want to do is replace the standard air filter with a K&N or something then get the fueling sorted but that will be over winter . I done quite a few jobs yesterday , here's a pic of the plastic cover i made to fill the hole under the seat .

Locky 21-10-13 20:09

The next job was to renew a few heavily rusted fasteners .

Locky 21-10-13 20:14

The fixings that hold the rubber flap thingy to the swingarm were a nightmare to remove and ended up fitting new thread inserts into the swingarm .

I done some wiring next . I need a power socket up front for powering my Garmin and for the Optimate so it'll need to be permanent live . I also need a switched live for some heated grips . I'll post a few picks later of what i done ..

majland 21-10-13 20:39

I've done like this.

Just below the instruments are a black cover. There is a connector with switched power. I've just put two small wires in a used cable binders to keep it in place.

I've put the power supply for my garmin in the right grey sidepanel. It does not take much power so I'm running it directly from the small connector (with a fuse)

I've also split the wire from the connector and routed it to the left panel. In there I've put a relay that is triggered by it. The feed for the relay is taken directly from the battery (with a fuse).

In the left panel i also found space for a step-less heat controller for the heated grips. This time I've chosen one from McCoi because it used a waterproof potentiometer.

The plan was also to use the relay for the chainoiler but i discovered that the scottoiler needed constant power (What a dumb design). I would have fitted the McCoi i had on the super tenere, but can't find a place on the pony to fit it hidden. The scootoiler has a more clean design with the pump integrated in the tank.

So if anyone is interested i have the pump and electronics for an McCoi for sale for a reasonable offer (You will need some tubing/tank and speed sensor - i did not have the time to remove it when i had sold the bike it was on. Just disconnected the electronics and the pump while the new owner was counting the money :-)

A few pics of my mods - just ignore the language:

Yes there's a lot of options for wiring the gadgets . I don't know my way around my zt660z to well yet but i done the wiring yesterday . I kept it quite simple as i'll need no more than my sat nav and grips . My permanent supply for the power socket comes straight from the battery via a fuse and the live switched supply for the satnav comes from the fusebox via a fuse . I'll post a few pics later and await for comments from folk :) . It's interesting to know how others done it . On my DL650 i wired a aux fusebox via a relay to power all the gadgets .

There is a lot of fuses on it - which one is for switched supply ? How much extra can you connect there ?

Btw I've also fitted a socket for a charger under the seat. Don't want a socket with live power available for others to short-circuit. So at home it is easy just to open the seat and connect a charger. (same reason i think it is a dumb idea that anyone can play with the scootoiler settings)

I've considered a power socket after the relay (i.e for charging a phone or similar), but don't need it at the moment. And the problem is again weather proofing it.

WeaveMcQuilt 21-10-13 22:56

I used the connector behind the instrument panel, ran this to the left (indicator) panel where I fitted an in-line 2A Fuse, followed by a 5V DC regulator to a waterproof USB socket (Bulgin Buccaneer if you're interested)

Permanent USB power for my phone, mounted on the Nav bracket above the cockpit.

Simple.

A few pcs of the wiring then , i first made a simple loom that would carry the wires along the frame ..
http://i41.tinypic.com/2metl6u.jpg
Than routed it along the frame
http://i41.tinypic.com/295zt68.jpg
I don't like crimps to join wires so always solder and heat shrink
http://i44.tinypic.com/10yhzlk.jpg
http://i43.tinypic.com/sonviv.jpg

In the loom there's 3 wires one for switched live ,one for permanant live and a earth . The permanant live and earth go straight to the battery vai a fuse . I use some nice ring terminals fitted with a propper crimping tool .
http://i44.tinypic.com/2le19cj.jpg

Likewise up front , spade connectors crimped for the power socket
http://i40.tinypic.com/25hkgwp.jpg
http://i44.tinypic.com/dze1lc.jpg
That the wiring for the power socket sorted , its to plug a Optimate and sat nav into , it makes it easy to swap the satnav from bike to bike ..

Locky 27-10-13 11:25

and the switched live , i took this from a switched live under the fusebox (lighting circuit)
http://i40.tinypic.com/15k9sp.jpg
It's not connected to anything up-front yet , i plan to use this for heated grips .
Do you think it will be ok to handle a extra 3 amps ?

Locky 27-10-13 11:49

Other jobs i've got sorted ..
Renewed the brake fluid , i flushed all the old fluid out . It looked like the original going by the colour .
I've treated most of the electrical connectors to ACF50 .
Fitted s Scottoiler , i routed the delivery tube through the swingarm , i'll post a pic later .
Ordered and fitted a single can link pipe from MTC , i need a tool tube on the other side .
Fitted a ram ball above the clocks for the satnav ..
I was going to give it a engine service this weekend but the oil filter did'nt turn up :( .

Locky 27-10-13 21:17

A pic of the Scottoiler delivery tube
http://i40.tinypic.com/s67txj.jpg
There's a hole under the swingarm about 5mm dia , it's quite easy to thread the tube through .

I'll have a look again - i used the other hole near the axle to get it out but didn't find the one by the swingarm.

But it is still dripping. It has been parked since thursday and drips more than two drops a day :-(

Locky 30-10-13 23:22

A few more mods . I've relocated the horn so it won't get covered in mud and water spray from the front wheel ..
http://i40.tinypic.com/se9jd2.jpg
and fitted a rubber cover over the reg/rect

That's exactly how I've mounted my horn. The expansion tank lower mount is ideal - never could understand why Touratech make a horn relocation bracket when you don't actually need one to relocate the horn!

Locky 31-10-13 00:05

I never knew Touratech made one , what a waste of money it would be !

Locky 31-10-13 00:08

Also made a plastic cover to stop that side of the engine getting covered in mud and ****e

Here it is...

http://shop.touratech.co.uk/horn-repositioner-yamaha-xt660z-tenere.html

It also points the horn down to the ground - which is a bit daft too!

Locky 31-10-13 18:38

Can't see any pic !

steveD 31-10-13 18:43

Just a couple of points Locky, the hole underneath the swingarm is to allow water out, if I was to use that I would open it up a bit. You have made an excellent cover at the front of the bike but do you know how hot the Reg / Recifier gets? Very hot, I think you may compromise the cooling. Just a thought.

Locky 31-10-13 19:19

SteveD , i think water will still drain out of the swingarm but i'll keep a check on things .
I did think about reg/rect cooling as i know they get quite warm and it's still at the back of my mind . I was thinking along the lines of other bikes i own/owned that have the reg/rect covered by fairings etc . I've not long sold a KTM950SM and the reg/rect was mounted behind the engine and quite close to the rear downpipe !
Now that you've pointed out the cooling situation i might make further mods to ensure it's in the airflow when riding ..

steveD 31-10-13 20:33

How about this?

I have a small bracket underneath the headlight bracket and have extended the wiring loom using a Fazer reg / rec. This keep it nice and cool and away from the water and crud from the front wheel.
The Fazer reg has about 300mm of loom connected directly into the unit and is sufficient to keep the loom loose and enable relacation here.
I chopped off the original unit and soldered the wires together, no more worries about that connector.

Locky 31-10-13 21:05

I thought of something along the same lines but thats probably the best place to mount it . I was thinking of extending the original loom and mounting it in a different location ..
