Normally take what MCN say with a pinch of salt, but Michael Guy's verdict pretty much sums up why a sold my 1150GSA and bought an XTZ back in 2008.
Interesting that they chose to take the "Touring" version with the reduced suspension travel and seat height. Mind you, the lower suspension must make it aerodynamic or something as it has a substantially higher top speed than my regular version! 120mph - same as the GS? :wtfk: |
Funny this should crop up today, decided to hold mine open all the way today and see how fast it went:
I was sat up and didn't tuck behind the screen for fear of looking even more of an idiot than I already did. She managed 118mph on the clock which I reckon would have been about 110mph on the SatNav (didn't have it switched on) But I reckon if I tucked in and had a head wind it would have eventually seen 120mph indicated, maybe more. But whatever the point of that is I don't know, it was noisy, buffety and damn uncomfy doing that speed. I go everywhere at between 65 and 80 depending on whether I'm going somewhere good or not. Had a go of my pals 1200GS the other day, it is a bloody giant great big monster of a bike, felt like a Harley FatBoy that someone had converted to go off road (a bit) Tenere's RULE !!!! |

Even my old XR400 would make mince meat out of the big girl on a trail or track.... |
Well the BMW 1200 GS sells cos it has loads of excellent marketing and image thrown at it, not because it is a good bike. The engine dates from WWII and quality and reliability is ok but nil compared to a Jap bike. The GS is far too heavy for real off road. Anyone who rides in the desert (for instance) knows that only singles are adventure bikes cos NOONE wants to have to try and pick up a big heavy beast like the GS. Hence KTM, Honda, Yamaha and the rest rule, up to about 650cc with single cylinders. I do some gentle trail riding with my Beta Alp 200 and BMW G450X and I can promise you that a big twin would NEVER be able to climb where we go, and I am a total beginner.
The GS1200 is a wonderful example of marketing wins over brains. It is a good bike but is worth about 60% of its sales price. A Super Ten is 100 times better. Ho hum!!! |
Any chance of a scan / pdf ?
