Rear brake squeal Tenere 660
 
The rear brake started to squeal slowing down at the lights etc. Really loud and annoying. I have changed the pad and the disc with no difference!!
Anybody got any clues or had similar experiences?

Try some copper anti-seize grease on the back/edges of the brake pads and the retaining pins where they touch the caliper and piston.

Dixcel do this down your way.

Do not get any on the friction surface.

The idea is to isolate parts as the whole brake assembly is resonating as you brake.

If this fails try another make/compound of brake disc or you amay be able to get ones with anti-squeal shims that sit between the back of the pad and piston to prevent this problem.

Have you looked at caliper piston??

Is it clean? Does it move back fairly easly when you press with your fingers?

Maybe its seized and when you press the brake it does push/squezze the pads onto disc but it doesnt move back??

I would give it a good clean up (take pads off, press gently on the lever to expose the piston bit more an clean it then push it bask with your fingers)

If you're really worried about the squealing, then you could try some "Permatex Disc Brake Quiet."

It is really very effective, but quite hard to get hold of in the UK. I've used a fair bit in the past on early Girling disc brakes fitted to Triumphs and Nortons which were notorious for having rattly pads and squeaky brakes. It's a clever sticky blue compound that you put on the back of the pads and it adheres them to the piston, but doesn't actually set so the pads can be removed just as easily as before, if not more easily. It was originally designed for older car disc brakes that weren't fitted with anti-squeal shims.

I think copper grease (as Sandman mentioned) does exactly the same job and easy to get, and can be applied not only on the brake pads.

Yes and no. Permatex works slightly differently, it's actually an adhesive, not a lubricant. It will stop the pad moving in any direction (other than obviously the one that works the brake!) Copper slip is slippery by nature and the pad can still move against the piston, pins etc, but will do a job "deadening" the sound.

I do actually use Copperslip on the Z, but only to keep the pins from seizing up, never had a problem with squealing.

I have heard of bonding the pads in but never actually seen it done. I would see it as the next step after copper grease if the squeal was still there.

Although you'd have to carefully remove all that copper grease to get anything to bond!!! :Christo_pull_hair:

That's exactly what I'd suggest too! It's what I was trying (and failing miserably) to imply with the original Permatex suggestion. ;)
