Clutch cable snapped - Oh noes!
 

I bought those cheap clutch and brake handles from China like everyone else did...

Always found the clutch a bit tight afterwards, but it seemed to loosen up after a while.

I've probably done 3,500 miles since I got them, in the space of about 2 months.

Clutch cable snapped tonight, right by the handle.

Respect to YamahaAssist / RAC free recovery for getting me home in under an hour and a half.
Dropped my bike at the dealer, chained up, for fixing first thing in the morning.


Just wondering if anyone else has had the same problem?

Obviously, Yamaha will replace items under warranty so I need to get my original handle back on first thing in the morning!

The clutch cable angle as it leaves the outer sheath is definitely wrong on the Chinese levers. I almost didn't fit em but managed to wind the quick adjuster in to reduce the angle and also use the slit in the adjuster so the cable can exit sharper without rubbing. Only problem is I then had to do my clutch adjustment at the side of the case.
Seems fine so far and I can't see any problem with it now.

My OE cable snapped in exactly the same place (9k miles from new).

Cable abrasion seems to be a problem, whatever levers you have, if the adjuster is a long way out. Best to get it right at the clutch end and just have it wound out a little (to get the free play right) at the lever.

I've also found it well worth putting a few drops of oil on the cable at the lever end on a weekly basis.

Not had a problem since in 16k miles (6k miles on Chinese levers).

Care to give a little bit of advice on how to do this?

Would like to keep my flashy levers, but don't wanna see this snap again!

First align the adjuster so the cable slit lines as the picture and wind it out a few turns to reduce the angle further. Then lock the knurled locknut with a flat tip.
Then ....
Other end of the cable at the crank case you can adjust free play there with two 12mm oe spanners. Can't quick adjust but got it sorted in one ride, stop adjust, ride, stop adjust, etc.
