Conventional forks.

Hi all, I've been reading with interest posts about USD fork mods. I have a 2011 XTX (wanted an R but the X was a good deal). I'm looking for an adjustable fork set than can deal with tarmac ( I'm not a racer) but can cope with Alpine fire tracks and pot holes. I could go the USD route (goodness knows there's enough choice on ebay) but I'd be happy with a modern set of right side ups that I could slide into my original yokes so I didn't have to mess around too much with my 2011. Any ideas?

All manner of bikes have adjustable RWU 43mm forks. The trick is going to be finding some that are approximately the right length and travel.

XR650L might be a good bet. Not modern levels of adjustability, but more adjustment than the ones you've got.

You'll need to mess around with wheel spacers, but that's relatively straightforward to get some machined up compared with custom yokes or steering stems.

Thanks for that, the search begins.

Did you ever hear about this?

It's some kind of spacer with compressed air regulation.
I haven't seen it alive but I read about it on a Spanish XT forum.

I'll post a picture as well:

Why not put a set of race tech gold valve or Ricor intimanators in your forks
then they will be as good or better than any RWU forks you can fit...

What tyres do you run on the 17" rims to allow you to use the XTX off road???? I have always fancied the idea of having 2 sets of wheels/tyres, a road set (17") for the summer and then a semi off road set (21 and 18, or similar) to use in the winter months and or for some very gentle off road. BUT it seems that I would need to change forks too so perhaps is not a practical idea, so another compromise might be to have two sets of standard XTX wheels, one with standard road tyres (I have Pirelli Diablos) and then one with semi off road tyres. What tyres are available in 17" which are ok for some gentle off road????? Thanks.

Thanks mishco, another alternative to look into.

I have Distanzias but to put my "off roading" into perspective I don't do mud or sand just stoney, loose mountain service tracks and mostly two up so I ride slow and carefully. You could use Continental TKC80 twinduros on 17" rims, that's the most I'd ever need. I'd like to lace a 19" rim to the front but the suspension is the biggest issue at the moment. I also have a 1984 XT600 which we did the Alps on last year. For us it was just great off road suspension wise and also nice soft power delivery. I had already laced an 18" front rim to it (from 21") to quicken up the turning on tarmac and it seems a good on/off road compromise. Sadly though the XT600 just doesn't have enough welly two up on the open road. Which brings me back to the XTX. Maybe I should stick 'em both on the trailer next year. Nah! I still want to sort out the suspension on the XTX, front then rear.
