Wildlife in my garden
 

I live in London, in a built up area, houses and roads all around me, I don't live in the countryside and yet, my garden has all sorts of wildlife visitors all year around, this morning I was woken up by foxes, and when I open the blinds I realised a whole family of them was out there entertaining themselves, not one or two but a mother and 3 cubs! I grabbed my camera and recorded the event, sorry about the camera shake but I was still half asleep

Mmm nice and cute, but nasty killers are foxes. If they were in my garden up here it wouldn't be my camera I shot them with ;). Same with the magpies half way through, even nastier critters them.

I know they are just doing what comes naturally but they aren't doing it in a natural world anymore.

In Australia, where foxes are feral, they get the same treatment as Austin describes.

Nevertheless, I agree with Keithblade's inference that they are a clever, beautiful animal, and watching that footage was a pleasure.

At the end of the day, you must accept that we were all placed on to this planet by "something" for a purpose. Whichever you believe that something to be, I am not getting into a religious discussion as I would defy the rules of this forum myself, but I believe every living being, be it human or animal has a purpose, and are part of a natural ecolgic food chain. Rats and mice are cute too, but they are also considered a vermin, and foxes gets rid of a lot of them, so they are in that circle too.

As Keithblade RIGHTLY said their natural rural habitat has been destroyed and they are been forced out. So they are now as urban as the common cat. Do we cull stray cats? No we don't, but in London we do cull a large number of deer in Richmond Park every season, I used to live very close to that park and in the dead of night you could hear 100's of gun shots, and they use the best marksmen, so you can make sure that if you hear 100 shots that's a 100 dead deer.

Nope, wrong in many ways.

Foxes in the countryside are doing better than they ever have. Changes to farming practices, and countryside and wildlife management are all benefitting foxes, often to the detriment of many other less prominent species - coz foxes kill and (sometimes) eat them, and in particular they hunt the young of their prey because they are easier to catch. A fox will normally wipe out an entire family of young in one go. Beautiful on the outside, indiscriminate killers on the inside.

The urban environment also suits foxes and their presence there has nothing to do with pressure from rural areas and everything to do with the adaptability of foxes to learn to scavenge as well as filling a void where there was not enough predators.

The overall fox population in rural and urban areas is out of balance as they are better and quicker at adapting to changes in the environment brought about by mankind. They are rightly persecuted, ok lets not beat about the bush, shot, to try and correct that balance. It is mankind's moral duty to do so from the day we started modifying the environment for our purposes. Failure to do so condemns thousands of other animals and even whole species to Extinction.

Crows, magpies, rats, grey squirrels seagulls, are examples of other creatures who are adaptable like foxes.

Sadly there are thousands of species who are less adaptable or slower to adapt that are slowly being wiped out through persecution by the more adaptable animals, sometimes persecution by humans and most worrying by loss of habitat. These are the creatures we should reserve our sympathies for and be directing our efforts at.

You make a very good point.

Please let's not start a debate on this, I only posted the video for the actual fun of it not to start a a fight, a bit like watching an old cowboys and red Indians film in this day and age which is so morally wrong in many many ways.

my mates a pest control officer,, he told me never go near a fox even if ye thing its gonna come to you,,as if they bite their teeth are very sharp an doub:sneeze:le like razors...
