Hello from belfast

Hey everyone,

Im dave and im from belfast, northern ireland. I have a red 06 xt660 that i only just bought last week. This is my first fuel injected bike and previous bikes have included an nsr125 a 400 bandit and then a 750 bandit (heavy jap import). I havent been riding that long but love the xt660 so far. The bike is standard except for a k&n air filter the previous owner put on and it has 3500 miles on the clock. Im not sure which mods im gonna start with although i did see a throttle twist mod by kev that seems pretty basic to do as im a graphic designer and have no mechanical knowledge at all, complete newbie lol!! Im interested in the throttle mod as ive noticed this wee bike isnt the greatest round town. As soon as i let throttle off it is very responsive and seems to jerk forward, i also have had to drop into second gear while cornering as the bike hasnt had a good enough pull in third to take the corner smoothly. Again though im not sure if this throttle mod will fix this or if its just my inexperience on riding a fuel injected, single cylinder bike. Anyhows, that was a bit of a long introduction, really glad to be here and im looking forward to having some proper fun on my bike if our irish summer ever decides to grace us with its presence lol!! Pleased to meet you all :-)

The surging you describe around town can be reduced considerably with a few relatively inexpensive and simple mods. You are best becoming an XT660.com supporter as some information is only available to supporters, plus you will be able to access the “Ask Kev” section of the forum and get expert advice on particular technical issues.

Anyhow, here are some links to some useful stuff to get you started…

Welcome mate, as posted above you have plenty of reading to do.

Hi pleiades, thats great mate, thanks for the welcome :-)
Im not too sure if its surging (ie:loss of power) im experiencing, its more just a jerk forward as i let the revs off and not quite high enough revs in the higher gears for cornering. I had a look at my ecu and its the 01 model type that kev says doesnt experience much surging in another thread. I did however adjust my co settings from 5 down to 0 although it hasnt seemed to make much difference. Im gonna have a go at the twist grip mod and see if that helps any of the jerkiness, really hoping i dont mess anything up cos as i said, im a total, non mechanical newbie, lol!!

You can dress it up how you like - but it's good 'ol XT660 surging! ;)

Work through the list, starting with the twist-grip mod and the other "free" to do stuff. Do one thing at a time so you can clearly check the results.

TBH, the last two mods (fuelling and O2 controller) will see the biggest improvements in smoothing out your ride.

There is very little you can mess up really - just take your time! Good luck.
