Rear Shock Fail

OK, I'll be honest, I expected more than 21-22K out of it but my rear shock has given up the ghost nonetheless. I've not had a chance to have a proper look as I've still not had a chance to clean off the crud from Lakeland but it's pishin' oot oil and bouncin' around on the spring. Feels like riding on oval wheels and not at all right.

I've seen one at a brakers, listed as a XT660Z Tenere Rear Shock, so my question is would this (a used one) be a good idea? Have they changed from year to year (mine's a 2010)? My spring coating is white I thought this was usual on the Ten but the one at the breakers is Red should this be a red flag? Is it an easy job, swapping out shocks? Any advice gratefully received guys, I gotta get this sorted quick-smart :smilies0979:

I wouldn't bother buying a used OE shock, most will be well past their best. Mine was goosed at 10K miles.

If the one at the breakers has a red spring it could be a Hagon shock, which may well be worth giving a try if the price is right (they're 300 new). Does it look like this...

If the worst comes to the worst the Hagons are fully rebuildable, unlike the OE ones.

Most breakers don't know the difference between a XTZ660 and a XT660Z.... in fact most riders don't!!!

I wouldn't be looking for a used OE shock, unless funding forces you down that route, if you do you should be looking to replace the spring, HyperPro will cost around 80 and will make a noticeable difference. But I'd be looking to use a non-OE shock assembly, HyperPro, Hagon - whatever you can afford will be better.

I'm sure DazzerRTW had his OE shock rebuilt by someone in Yorkshire... could be wrong though, might be worth a search. But it's still going to cost you, and the bike will be off the road for the duration.

OK, point taken, buying into somebody else's possible rear shock nightmare probably isn't the wisest of moves.

This Hyperpro idea interests me though, if I can get something for under a ton that would be sweet! (well less painful than a bill stretching into several hundreds of squids). I've looked at the usual suspects, Offtheroad.de getting the closest so far but can't find a rear shock anywhere obvious where do you guys go for your suspension needs?

Nothing at Adventure Spec, Touratech asked me to loosen my belt in preparation and M&P appear to cater for every other bike under the sun apart from mine.

Worst. Website. Ever.

Bearing in mind I'm presently trying to look like I'm not trawling the interweb for bike parts at work...

So far I've found this or this but they look very different prospects. Can anyone explain to me what I should be looking for. Do I need a reservoir for example? The Fleabay one appears to come with stickers... that's important.

I just put a Ohlins S46DR1 in my XTR.. 402 euros from OTR..
not had a chance to give it a good work out yet... I think
it will need a re-valve as they are tuned for mainly road with
light off road use...

Ohlins / Wilbers / WP are the way to go... There are a few others
but I have not riden on them...

Hagon shocks... I have seen inside them.. The word crude springs
to mined...
When it was fully compressed the damping valve left the oil & went into
gas section of the body... no floating oil/gas separator..
The piston wasn't sealed to the body buy a o-ring or lip seal so oil
could flow around the piston instead of though the control valve
( I use the team control valve very losely here)

Agree. However, its always best to call them for advice and current offers.

The Hyperpro is exactly the same shock I am running (but the Yacugar branded version). It is a very good shock for the money. 370 delivered free is pretty good.

BTW both your links are to the same place - Calsport! The image on their eBay site is more accurate as to what the shock and packaging looks like now (black spring), and you'll get stickers with either!

These also come recommended for similar money.

That's about 340 not bad. According to FTR the S46DR1 is the same model for the Ten... that seem right to you guys that the R and the Z carry the same shocks???

I've used OTR before too so they also have that in their favor (they always send stickers).

I think they may have put their prices up... or am I looking at the wrong thing? I'm also assuming that 'Weight Driver' is talking about me right?

Have the standard shocks ever been red?

Mine is an 08 and has a red shock. 22k miles and touch wood, is fine so far.

Update:

So, I'll update you again when I attempt to fit this thing but I have the replacement part on order. Not fancying putting another plasticine Yamaha one back on I've gone down the aftermarket route (bling, bling, bling I hear you cry) and bought a Nitron NTR Sport+ from the ever helpful guys at Rugged Road.

The guys there have been amazing, not only talking me through ALL the options (they offered me a total of EIGHT for the Tener!) but they were honest about what you get for you buck. I didn't end up going for the most expensive but am confident that what I am getting is gonna rock the trails. The shock is spec'd up for me personally so there's a few embarrassing questions about my weight and riding habits but all in all a painless process all done over the phone (they called me back how often does THAT happen?).

PLUS, they're sending me a load of stickers whilst I await delivery.

Feeling better? Hell yeah!!!

Big thanks to all you guys for your advice too I would have plumped for totally the wrong thing had it not been for your words of wisdom!

MLC: Hi, is that rugged road?
RR: Yes, how can we help?
MLC: Do yuo send free stickers?
RR: Er, we can yes
MLC: Good I need a shock, any shock, well not any shock but the one with most stickers...........

Deal breaker? Nah, but it did sweeten the deal. I freakin' love a sticker me :slywink:

Glad you got it sorted, and all on the same day too.

Now you'll have to master the murky world of suspension settings - just having preload to fiddle with will never be enough again! ;)

Chris1811 18-05-13 18:29

Glad u got it sorted dude. Ive just looked at mine again and it is white after all. Think i was confusing it with my car shocks when i replaced them for FK lowering springs.

Yes .. I did get it cheaper than you fella's..
19% VAT was not added as it was going out side Europe...
402 euros + 30 euros shiping = $692NZ
DHL shiping was dirt cheap , that surprised me...
Usely the shiping is the deal breaker...

It is this one for the XTR ===> http://www.off-the-road.de/en/XT-660...ck-XT-660.html

Moyston 11-07-13 14:51

ive been looking. checked this thread ..this ohlins shock..$696 bucks..your paying for a name...must be good...

so did anyone get any posts of pics to see how good it is?
