MK1 XT660R and XT660X Swingarm Swapability

Basically this just happened today to my XT660R:

That ended up in a tow truck ride back home.

Looking on E-Bay XT660R swingarms are scarce, there are a couple more XT660X swingarms.

Is there any difference other than the color? I also have a XT660X and already measured them, they seem to be identical... But not quite sure.

Anyone can confirm if the swingarms of MK1 XT660R/X are swapable? (MK1s had both steel swingarms).

The swap has been done before, there are 2 different types of XTX swing arms if I remember right you will also need the rear axle & adjusters for the other swinging arm if you use the old 2004 to 2006 XTX swing arm. If you use 2007> XTX it should be a straight swap.

I think you meant 2004-2006 is a straight swap and 2007+ needs more parts?

MK1 XT660X (2004-2007) has a steel swingarm. I've got one, 2005 XT660X, and the swingarm seems to be the same size. I measured the spacing of the chain guard bolts and the length of the rear of the swingarm to the welds that are almost in the front, they were about the same.

What I'm not sure about is the tabs that hold the brake line and width. On the XT660R the brake line is routed on the "inside" face of the swingarm, on the XT660X it's on the "outside". Then there is a 130 vs 160 rear tire.

It has been done before, the thread is somewhere on the forum. The details are in my mod book page 378, I will see if the info is still on the forum as it was a long time ago.

Hello

Did you find any info about the swap would like to do that with my R. Thanks!

The information seems to have been lost over time, this is one of the main reason I did the modification index so I can keep all the info in one place never to be lost.

Ok will see if I could borrow a X swing arm after the summer to test. If it will fit I will start a tread! :)

If it's any help I seem to recall that the member who did the swingarm swap was called cdo1uk. Do a search in the members list to find him and search his threads/posts. I don't thing he's been around here for a couple of years?

I did read the thread in question I seem to remember. If my memory serves me correctly the following things need thinking about when doing the swap over...
  • XTR rear brake hose is too short - you'll need a longer one
  • The XTR chainguard is no good - source another
  • If using the XTR wheel different spacers are needed - may need machining?

There might be more, but other than that I think it was a fairly straight forward swap.
