Things are not off to a good start. At a stop on the way to Hull I noticed a couple of drips of oil under my bike. It's the chain: O rings popping out of several links, the oil on the floor is the grease from the links mixed with scotoil. The chain isn't going to last the trip. It's only done 8,000 miles. :(

Could someone tell me what size chain and how many links I need please. It's a 2010 XTR. Also any suggestions for a bike workshop in Germany probably - monday /Tuesday should see us in the black forest area. Thanks.

Thanks Gary that's just what I wanted to know. Perfect.

Anyone any ideas on how to split the old chain without a grinder, file, or chain tool of any sort ? If I can't find anywhere to fit a riveted chain I will get one with a split link as a stop gap.

Just read this but if you are still in the country and leaving from Pompey then I can sort you out with a chain fitted. If not good luck and have a ball.

We were just heading for the ferry in Hull. Only my second ever visit to Hull. Sorry never noticed B&Q.

Now in Trier in western Germany. We tried 2 bike shops in Maastricht, and 3 in liege in Belgium. All shut for the day - not open on Monday's at all. In Trier we tried Louis, Polo, Hein Gericke, and 2 independent dealers. No luck or could get a C&S kit in 5 days but couldn't fit. Eventually got to Yamaha dealer in Konz who can supply and fit a C&S kit and Cush drive on Wednesday. We are spending 2 days here until it's sorted.

The chain is completely FUBAR'd. There's so many stiff links which are pulling the chain I have had to push the wheel right back in the swinging arm and it's still too tight. There's black gunge pissing out everywhere and the whole bike vibrates with the roughness. Hopefully all good to go after Wednesday.

Glad your getting it sorted early on in the trip . . . . even if it means sitting around for 2 days!

But I can think of some really worse places than Trier to have to stay in . . . . enjoy the break and safe riding once your sorted.

Just to update the chain situation.....Yamaha Germany and Lutz Yamaha in Konz pulled out all the stops and got a chain, sprockets, and Cush drive supplied and fitted in a little over 24 hours. Excellent service. I

f you are in the area and need service they are the guys to go for. Everywhere else was totally unhelpful.

Lutz Yamaha in Konz :)

We are now in Italy having ridden through two days of heavy non stop rain , with snow falling from the sky as welll as on the ground on the passes.
