Surging
About to look at a low mileage 2011 660r with view to buy. Does anyone know if the problematic XT surging issues have been sorted out by this year please?
|
I believe so, but no direct experience. For what it's worth, my 2006 is far better than the 2004 I used to have, to the point where I don't see any need to modify it. It's a little chunky off idle, but nothing you can't ride around and call it character. I think Yamaha improved the ECU over time, and I'm told that by 07 they had it sorted on the R, so I would reckon a 2011 would be fine. At least, that's how I would be approaching a possible purchase, i.e. not worried in the slightest :)

I recently bought a low mileage 2009 XTR, and the surging doesn't bother me. Coming from an inline four, I DO notice something odd holding constant speed in 2nd or 3rd around 30mph, but nothing that I would have commented on if it weren't for a million forum threads alerting me to a "problem". As Black Dog says, it's character!
I think it's easy to read about things like surging, buy a bike and then go looking for a problem. In reality, it's a thumper - it is what it is. Get it and enjoy it! |
From what I understand, 2009 onwards has an "improved" ECU. My 2008 rode nicely, without significant issue when I test rode it. Then I changed the exhaust system which pronounced the issue to a state that made the bike less than enjoyable to live with.
However, should you find yourself in this position, there is a help available from the resident guru (Kev) on this forum. My bike is now (again) very enjoyable to ride, with the new exhaust. Good luck! |
The 11's still have a small amount of surging, you can always fit one of my 2012 O2 controllers which will stop 99% of the surging

2012 02 mod?
What's that then Kev? So much info to wade through, but couldn't find what you meant. Is it a difficult thing for someone with very basic mechanic skills to fit? Cheers.

Kev has designed these 2 mods to be near enough plug and play with minimal knowledge required, in fact he will also send you very concise fitting instructions, with pictures of step by step procedures. You can ask around in the forum, anyone who has received these has managed to fit the two mods in under 15 minutes without problems. |
Thanks Captmoto, all the details are here for the O2 controller.

PM me for full details, payment via PayPal. You need both mods to correct the A/F ratio for all XT660 models from 2007 onwards. |
