Newbie says hi and seeks advise

Hi Newbie from Brighton UK here. Going to look at xt660r 2011 with view to buying tomorrow. Any useful pointers for things I should look at or check carefully? Has the snatchy low speed fuelling been sorted by 2011? Many thanks

Hi finecitygirl, not much to check for these bikes are pretty sturdy, just look for general abuse, other than that crash damage, welcome to the forum.

Check service record,+ any oil leaks.Engine is bullet proof.:hiding:

:hello: and :welcome: to :660:

My biggest advice to you would be to make sure you are buying from a reputable dealer, I mean these bikes are pretty sound so it is easy to spot tell tale signs of wear and tear, inspect for rust on engine casing, check that the sprockets and chain are sound, you want to get some miles out them at least before you have to replace them during your service intervals.

By all means take it for a test ride and see if you can feel a smooth engine, and that should be just about it.

But as I've said if you buy from a reputable dealer, have a look at the terms of the warranty, what is and what is not covered and make sure that there is a return policy in case you either are not satisfied or something turns out to be wrong.

For anything else once you are happy and you have got it, come back here for advice and support on anything related to these wonderful bikes, cause that's what we're here for.

Enjoy and good luck

Welcome aboard!!!! The XT660 is bullet proof and with a little love is good to go anywhere. Mine is a 2011 XT660X and I have applied some of the Kev mods and it goes GREAT!!!! Have fun.

Yeah...new bike!

So, the bike was in mint condition and hasn't even done 1,000 miles yet. A bash plate has been added + rack and top box. I test rode it and it seemed all ok except for some mild jerking and surging in second gear when I was trying to just keep the speed steady around 25 - 30 mph. Its still under warranty, so, I took a chance and bought it and I'm planning to get it into my local dealer to sort the fuelling. Hope I'm not being naive?

Congrat's and welcome.

Don't bother with your dealer, get yourself a Kev Mod to sort the fuelling, open out the arir box snorkel and fit a K&N along with a set of MTC cans and you're away! Some folk go the power commander route, but Kev's Fuel mod is fine.

Search the forum for all this.

Enjoy the new bike, but we need pics!!!

Dear new member, I repeat to you my welcome in our forum on behalf of myself and all our fellow members. You are now in good hands and you don't need to go back to the dealer because they won't have the required knowledge that we have been gathering in the last 9 years.

We have been running this forum since 2004 previously under a different management and name and then we were back again in 2006 under the present management and new name.

2004 was the year in which when these bikes were first issued with the present engine plant. The reason we started this forum was because there was a need for people to learn and understand the problem of surging which has affected nearly all the models from 2004 until current date. The main culprit for this surging issue is the fact that in order for these bikes to comply with emission regulations they have been (choked) and fitted with a very restrictive air box and ECU settings which don't allow this bike to operate with the correct air/fuel ratio.

Thanks to expert mechanics like Kev we have learnt that there is a way around this problem and have been spreading the "good word" ever since.

Of course as many people suggested you should really get a Kev Mod and O2 eliminator, because these two together will stop the ECU from continually reprogramming and supply the incorrect a/f ratio, but in the meantime to help you get a smoother ride with less jerkiness please read these two threads and follow the step by step instructions to increase the CO2 level i.e. supplying more fuel to the mix in the low revs and the other is to increase your tickover or idle speed which greatly helps when riding at low revs and thus stopping your bike from juddering.

In order to give your air box a chance to breath more air, you should pull out the snorkel which is situated under the saddle right on top of the air box because that is one of the biggest factor that Yamaha had to apply in order for the bike to comply with the emission rules which I have mentioned above.

So please start with these 3 threads and report back with your experience.

One last thing, we have also learnt that a loose chain on a single cylinder bike such as this, plays havoc with the surging, so please make sure you maintain always the correct chain tension, not too loose and not too tight.

Let us know how you get on and good luck.

Its funny you sit in 2nd doing 30 :) with the kev mod o2 controller dna stage 1&2 and open mtcs i sit in 4th doing 32mph with out much bogging and dosnt feel like its going to stall or that your sat in the wrong gear .

P.S and she still pulls fine from such low revs

Its amazing what the air and fuel changes do the xt :)

Hello FCG

We are just happy to have another girl along in the forum.

Congratulations on your purchase and LISTEN to what the folks on the forum have to say.

I also have a XTR and a free 5 minute mod fixed most of the surgeing...the rest you learn to love and live with :-)

Regards

Marc
