Wind Protection
I do a 40 mile each way commute to work on my Tenere, of which 25 miles is motorway. Being 6'1" I am getting buffeted from the standard screen, so I am looking for better protection.
This has probably been discussed on many previous threads, but can anybody recommend me a better screen to take the wind over my head. Any experience with the Touratech Spoiler? Expensive, but any good? |
Wind Protection
I've tried both tall screens (Puig) and screen top spoilers (TT and Aerotrim). I have to say that the spoilers do a better job with the buffeting. Aerotrim is half the price of TT item, but I prefer the TT one because you can take it off quickly for off road or when it's really hot for more air flow (but I did lose my first one in cross winds - so make sure it's tight!)
It's all very personal though, so I'd start by getting some card and gaffer tape and experiment first with size, shape and height before you shell out on anything. BTW - :006: Welcome to XT660.com! |
I have the Yamaha tall screen on my XTR and I find the ride much improved
|
My tenere was exactly the same ( buffeting ) but I found most of it was coming
From slopes at front of petrol tank. I blocked under headlight with white Perspex just above tow hook and it is a totally different bike,no buffeting at all.. As your riding just put your hand at top of slopes and you will feel vortex coming Up towards your head. Just what I found worked for me. |
Thanks all. Some experimenting required.

i had the same problem with buffeting on my xtr at 55 plus.just fitted a touratech handle bar bag and what a difference my head is no longer getting blasted about still getting wind on the chest but it's no longer trying to blow me off the back of the bike a lot quieter too.

Try a smaller screen
. Strange but makes a big difference where the air hits your body. There is NO one answer, so just try what suit you best. And post results of course. |

I use the slightly taller Givi screen on mine and it made a difference if it helps.

yamaha get yourself a wind tunnel test booked as your buffeting is crap on a modern day bike...........shame. plz learn from bmw

It's a motorbike, and a dirt bike at that. Get used to it.

Buffeting problem
As I probably have mentioned before in here I have recently purchased a Tenere 660 2011 model.
I have now been out for a swing through Sweden, Finland and Norway and almost added 7000 km on the clock. Wind buffeting is really terrible on this bike for me. I am quite average tall - 180 cm or 5'11 in english measurement I belive. Would a taller screen, for example the one that "Off the road" have that is 8 cm taller help for this terrible buffeting? Or are there dome other/better solutiones? |

However, what I did find is that a careful amount of experimenting with cardboard, old visors and sticky tape helped a lot in finding a solution that suited me... Try various screen heights, deflectors, spoilers etc with the card/tape first, see what works for you, then have a look on the market to see what's available that's closest to what you created (or get something bespoke made up properly). Warning: You will get some strange looks though whilst you've got old boxes taped up all over the front of your bike! ;) |
With my last Tenere I tried lots of different solutions for the screen, even made my own adjustable spoiler on the top of the screen.
This time I when for a simpler solution and hacked off the top of the screen, no more bad vibes around my helmet..... The turbulence coming off the screen hits me around the neck area and over the shoulders so no more vibrating peak on the Tour X. As already mentioned I think you need to look at the buffeting coming up through the forks. I have put a spoiler below the headlight which stops most of this. Nick. |
I think your best bet is as a few people have said try a few cardboard cuts and or even try going lower by removing the screen completely. each persons different.
