CR250 USD forks on XTR
I doing the USD conversion..
I'm useing 2000 Honda CR250 USD Showa units.. It's turned out a lot easyer than I thought it would be. The Honda forks are all but a drop in conversion... CR & XTR use the same bottom bearing 30x55x17 just needed a 7mm thick spacer to put on the CR steering stem before the Yamaha seal & bearing as the CR stem is a little longer.. CR yokes are half the weight of the XT unit as it has a titanium stem... Then the top Yamaha 25x47x15 bearing is replaced with a "32906" 30x47x12 bearing.. Be a couple of weeks before I can test ride it... forks are away getting the the MX valve stacks replaced with a more enduro set up & heavyer springs to carry the XTs weight.. being twin chamber canister forks I figgered it better to let someone that knows what they are doing play with them.. Ohlins shock next.......... sorry no pics ... I left the camrea on a picnic table at the beach.. |
Can't wait to see some pics if you manage to get some :)
|
Interesting, must be alot better for offroad. Also waiting for some pics. :)

the forks are away getting worked over at the moment... having the length shortened to the same as the XTR forks 890mm axle centre to top... the travel is also being reduced to XT specs of 225mm the CR forks have 300mm travel & that puts the skid plate under the terf.. Valve stacks are being set up more for enduro than MX..So they handle sharp quick bumps rocks/tree roots/ditchs etc.. which MX tracks don't have... And of course re-sprung for the extra weight of the XT... |
Is it a straightforward swap to actually get the forks in the clamps then? Before being re-sprung, shortened, etc.?
|
Pete - interesting on your decision to run with the same travel as standard.
Also, are you looking to run a CR wheel, with CR brakes? Or fabricating spacers, spindle and caliper adapter to run the XTR wheel/brakes? And another request for pictures.... :pics now: |
:YouRock: pics please.

all you need is a new top berring 30 x 47 x 12 - 32906 the bottom bearing is the same as the XT 30 x 55 x 17 that with 2000 CR250R forks.. |

270mm..trying to find a 320mm |
EBC do a "Supermoto" 320mm rotor and caliper relocation bracket. I note that these have been used on a couple of Africa Twins that went the CR USD route for their front upgrade.
EBC Direct sells the kit for 169 + delivery from UK - with a bit of luck, you have a local source? Otherwise, here is the LINK |
How much did the forks set you back Petenz? I'd really love to do this conversion. How much spannering ability is needed lol? I'd consider myself good with anything other than engine work lol :eusa_whistle:
The main reason for me doing the swap would be to get rid of the upper fork guards that are standard. To me, they just don't look right. XTX's, IMO, look like a bike with its shoulders hunched up and face protruding from the stem. Just doesn't look right to me. There's nothing I can do about the tank, though I have ideas about redesigning the front. Especially the headlight :slywink: And changing the forks means I can get lower fork guards slapped on the bike. I've played around with some I designed but they just didn't look right on the RWU forks :( Anyway, hope the conversion goes well for you mate and please, please please tyr and get some pics lol :smilies0944: |
Get some fork socks cheaper, stick thicker oil in the forks.:YellowCrazy_J8GDC6:

I just really love the way the USD's look :D can't wait to be able to afford to do the swap. it'll either be the 2000 CR's or KTM 625's I use :)

much... So I made a new set of valves for the XT forks... made a big diffrents..but still not up to USD forks.. http://imageshack.us/a/img140/7093/valvef.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img32/7183/ssa41921.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img12/2681/ssa41920d.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img812/2962/ssa41924.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img233/8521/ssa41922.jpg |
Just Googled the exchange rate, works out at 115.99 GBP all in. Any info on where you got it all? eBay?
Cheap as chips really. I still don't understand how in the 21st century, a bike such as the XT can be designed and manufactured with RWU forks. I mean, no-one I can think of would be crying out for anything like Ohlins or Showa BPF's but some nice-looking USD forks would have been really nice. And a bloody fuel guage. For God's sake, I'd love a fuel guage...... |

nice set up pete.
good work. how did you go setting up the ignition assembly? did it fit into the wr top triple or did you have to make up a plate? and how about the steering stoppers? what did you do there? also did it change the handling much? just wondering if the triples have the same offset as the XT? I have a 07' xt660x with snapped forks so am looking for clues on replacing them. USD or conventional. cheers mate... |
I have finaly managed to get back onto the XTR suspenion..
This is taking alot longer than I hoped... trying to do two meany things at once... the triple clamps are a drop in fit... yer just need a 32906 bearing for the top & the XT bottom bearing & seal... steering stops need a bit of work I'm going to make bolt on stops from 16x16 square bar.. is simple & saves welding... The forks have been re-valved / sprung & had the travel shortened to 240mm as the bike only has 250mm of ground clearance... http://imageshack.us/a/img401/3357/74lj.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img17/3442/r47x.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img834/9074/j8ji.jpg |

It very well maybe IF the CR caliper had the same piston & pad area as the XTR one.... Almost about back on the road... just mounting the rally raid screen & fitting up the lights etc... need to find a longer clutch cable.... |
Spare Forks
I dont suppose you have a set of Std forks you want to get rid of??
