DNA Stage 3 on a Ten
 

Hiya, I'm considering going for the DNA stage 3 side of the air box filter. I'm already up to stage 2 with Kev's fuel mod and twin MTC cans and was wondering if anyone had done this mod on the Tenere and how much difference it made. Are there any disadvantages?

Always looks an easy route for water to me if its being used off road, and does the benefit outweigh the bother ???

Ok look tests have proven that only when the bike is submerged in water up to the knee that water has been found in the air box, but this was tested with both the stage 3 and without, in fact when you have the bike in water past the tank line, water will find its way in there from the top and from the airbox drip hole.

However other test with a jet wash spraying water at the stage 3 filter have shown NO water leakage unless of course you point the jet wash for long enough to completely remove the waterproofing oil compound that is applied to the filter folds from factory and that is one of the benefit of the DNA filter which can be washed, dried and re-activated with the waterproofing oil available in the DNA cleaning kit.

So to conclude, HOW often does any of you have their Tenere wading in deep waters so deep and for so long?

Oh and I am telling you this at a time when the previous sponsorship between us and DNA has ceased to exist so I have no interest, because I wouldn't be able to sell you a filter because they don't support us anymore.

If you lob a Tenere in a river or a large puddle, water will get in through the normal (stage 2?) filter. Trust me, I've tested this ;-), and you've said the same. An air filter that was waterproof would be pretty rubbish at flowing air. Besides, anyone that's had a DNA filter long enough to need to clean and re-oil it knows that when you run it under a tap, there's no real resistance to waterflow.

The stage three filter is made of the same stuff, so water will flow through just as well. The difference is that it will do so when wading if the water gets to the bottom of the airbox, rather than the top. The wading depth of the bike is relatively poor anyway compared to the likes of the 690 and the BMW 650s, why make it worse?

Additionally, and even if you don't go through standing water that deep, it's taking the full force of any water and mud that splashes up. You might argue that the S3 filter means water will drain out as well as in, but water going through the filter is going to degrade the filter oil quicker, and mud coating the outside of the filter is going to stop it breathing well anyway.

Even a small amount of water in the bottom of the airbox - not enough to get sucked into the cylinder - will end up draining into the cases via the breather, degrading the engine oil and reducing the life of the internals.

So no, I don't think the S3 filter, wonderful as the airflow through it may be, has any place on a bike that gets used in the dirt.

if you use the Tenere properly the answer to that is A) a lot B) long enough :) :)

Uberthumper: how much higher can you submerge the 690 then? i though it was about the same as the Ten. (ive never ridden one)

Both the 690, and AFAIK all the Rotax BMWs have the tank under the seat (where the XT airbox is) and the airbox in the 'tank', so the intake is roughly at headstock height.

It's a nicer setup, although of course they don't take 23l of fuel in that underseat tank, so to get the range of the Ten you have to have multiple (expensive, aftermarket) tanks.

Spot on! I have a F650GS (don't hate me!) and the airbox is higher than the seat with a snorkel that reaches up behind the headstock. You need to be at headlight level in water to ingest some into the engine while riding. Although, all bikes are about the same height of the ground on their side in a river :p

Anyway, I learned.... which is why I also have a XTR which I enjoy more as the BM'er is spoiled by having a 600 mile fuel range (ie holds 39 litres) and is like riding a fat overweight schwein. :(

I ride Strata fairly regular, and was one of my reasons to get a larger off road style bike , it does become tiresome riding an XR400 from Cardiff all the way up there and home again. I see it as you need something that is fairly sturdy to avoid water ingress and the dna 3 just didnt fill me with confidence.... I will not knock its ability... but its just not for me.
Riding stuff like Strata doesnt always mean the height of water you made be riding through ,places like this mean a bike can be easily leant over to water level though.
With all this talk of water mind............. please tell me as this bike being my first F.I offroad bike, what would be the proceedure to do if the water did get into it.I mean a carb bike is easy drain carb, wouldnt have a clue what to do with F.I ???
