When i got my ten i got given these 3 keys (plus the red one). The one in the picture with the bolt through i actually found bolted to the bike when doing some work once :)

But only the big black one (with the Yam logo & i guess the red one) will actually start the bike. The other key will turn the engine over but is retarded by the immobiliser. The immboliser light stays flashing while using these keys but when you use the black key the light goes out. (and the bike will start)

So when your out and about....if you loose your black key....your basically ****ed then????

(ive never owned a bike with am immboliser.)

Er well yes!!!!! BUT as you have the red one you can get your other black ones BUT they must be black ones with the head) programmed to work correctly by any Yam dealer. The two chopped ones you have are well useless for starting the bike BUT you can remove the seat. Go see a dealer mate before it happens hehe.

The two black ones (non Yam) are useless. You need a spare with the little transducer inside it, and it needs to be programmed in too by using the red one.

Two options, try a locksmith shop, they may have the correct key blank (with the chip) and can cut you a set. You'll then either have to program it yourself (I posted instructions earlier this week) or take a trip to the dealer.

Or, give the dealer your key number and have them order in a Yamaha key, then get it programmed when you go in to collect your new key.

Personally, I would be a little suspicious of buying a bike without the OE keys. I would certainly ask some questions as to why the originals were missing, and where they might be...... So, I would take the more expensive option of getting a popper Yamaha key ordered, but the locksmith option should work just as well, and maybe cheaper.

i bought the bike 2nd hand last April. i got the original black Yam key..Plus the Red one. So when you buy the bike new should there of been more keys than this?

i presumed that was what you got from new so never questioned it. best go see my Yam dealer....this is going to cost some isnt it!? :103:

That wasn't a dig, what I was trying to say badly, is that I think it's better to have the right keys if you then want to sell it on.

Yep, one Red, two Black and a little tag with the key number on it.

I would suggest that the previous owner lost the key, so had two cut and hid one on the bike in case he lost the key again.... but failed to check the keys worked first!

i need a spare key then, :( when you go off touring you should have a spare key with really.....in the past i took one of the "copy" keys so not to loose the master RED key.....but at the time i thought a copy key would start the bike :confused1:
