Where are you going in 2013?

Around the Caspian sea

Hi there,
My next trip is going to be around the Caspian sea. I will do a full circle, starting in Russia, Volgograd, going east and around. Includes Kasakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Iran, Aserbajan, Georgia and across Caucasus back to Volgograd.

All in all I plan three weeks, starting in the the beginning of july.

Sounds an amazing trip. I'm planning to do Nordkapp and returning via Finland and St Pete, but it won't be this year. Probably France with the daughter is the best I will do.

SimonRoma 14-01-13 11:13

Wow. Well I was planning a trip to Spain in April, but sounds rather sad compared to yours...

duibhceK 14-01-13 12:00

Around the Caspian sounds great. We're planning to go to Ulaan Baatar, MON. But due to logistical reasons that will have to wait until 2015.

So for this year we have already planned:
- trail riding weekend in Wales end of March
- 5 days of Schwarzwald on tarmac in July
- trail riding weekend in Wiltshire in August
- trail riding weekend in Brabant, Belgium in October
- probably some long weekends in the Eifel and Mosel regions in between.

And then there's an opportunity to put the bikes on a truck and pick them up at Burgas airport in Bulgaria for next to nothing. So we'll probably do that. Just not sure yet where to go from there. We have 8 days before the bikes need to go back on the truck. So might ride down into Turkey.

DaleC 14-01-13 14:40

I'm currently sorting the bike in order to enjoy a couple of months in Morocco getting lost on Pistes. Due to work commitments being extended from February to Easter, I have ruled out heading further south into Africa due to the temps warming up, especially on the return leg.

Given this later departure date, I probably won't go further south than Western Sahara and am aiming to return to the Continent early June to head north to avoid the heat.

This leaves me with 6 weeks left of my Sabbatical to wander the earth like an unwashed gypsy. Not entirely sure where that time will be spent, but I am currently reviewing Turkey or a lap of the Black Sea.

A lap of the Caspian sounds grand, but doing it in 3 weeks is too fast for me :)

This, and then some....

Looks like much excitement ahead for you guys also, both in Europe, Africa and America.

I agree that three weeks around the Caspian might seem short, but I need to do something this year, and this is manageable and a nice compromise with my family.

Visa to Kazakhstan, check :-)

muppdog 17-01-13 01:13

A week around Wales on the 600 Ten and 3 weeks Norway, Sweden, maybe Denmark on the 660 Ten. Want to get as far north as I can. ( and its not Nordkapp!) Iceland is tempting me for next year before I get too old for it.

Got a few plans well in the pipeline so far...

XT660 Lakes Bash in May,

Western Isles of Scotland in June,

2 weeks in the French Alps in July, spending a few days in the Vercors Massif area near Grenoble, (awesome limestone gorge area with narrow cliff roads, tunnels etc.), then basing myself in Briancon for some high trails and a day over to Bardoneccia in Italy for the Stella Alpina off-road event. 4 x XT660s going (3 Tens and an R).

I still have an August week to decide on :-)

also if you are using a garmin download the OSM maps onto a seperate SD card, they are more detailed than the standard garmin maps and you can switch between them on the fly and they are free, just highlight what you need and it will make a custom map for you

they are here - http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/

also keep an eye on this website to make sure all the passes are open - http://www.bushducks.com/tripreps/passopen.htm

Another Open Invite to Morocco, with the EDC

After the inaugural ride out to Maroc with the EDC (French for 'Team of Goats')....

See here for a laugh and a half....

http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=841901

If any one is interested ...probably scooting over to Maroc again about end of October.

I've been before a good few times in my capacity as an off road guide..(albeit on Honda CRF 450's) and in 4x4....I know what's what..speak French...and can introduce anyone who wants to take that first step to experience Africa without breaking your bank.......free of charge and with the knowledge that some one somewhere apparently knows what they're doing LOL

From my house in France ....budget is max €400-450 per week all in.

For example if 4 riders rent a 4 bed bedroom it works out at about €18 per night with an evening meal and breakfast thrown in.

Ferry is about €85 return from Spain for one rider and one moto.

Stash €100 per month until October and you'll be good to go..... when the Southern weather and temperatures are perfect...a great winter break!!

Thinking about a dose of wild camping thrown in this time just for more of a laugh...(so it'll be cheaper....approx €300 per week??).

.....main aim is as much OFF ROAD PISTES as possible...like this....

Will do Ohlins,
Can someone tell me what you do with pictures here on the site. I cannot seem to get it right. I have tried to paste a link from Picasa, but somehow its not working..

Ohlins 23-01-13 11:16

I use www.tinypic.com and use that to upload the pictures. Go through the registering procedure as you do with any site.

You create an album within Tinypic and upload to that album. You can resize them to suit your forum report etc

When they arrive there you click on which one you choose and there'll be a list of inks under Grab Your Code on the left hand side.

I use 'Img Code for Forums and Message Boards'. Right click and copy that code.

(The bigger the image file size the longer it'll take to upload. I resize mine before uploading them and with tiny pic you can upload 5 pictures at a time, where it says Upload More)

When you start your thread in the moto forums you'll see a square icon with a mountain symbol in it,just above where you start to write.

Click on that and it'll open a box. Paste your img code from eg Tinypic and put it there. Click OK and it'll then be within your thread. Where you put your typing icon within the thread will ensure where your picture will be.

You can preview your post and delete any pics you don't dont want by just deleting the img line you see. You just use your return button to move them up and down the way you do with normal typing.

:)

Appreciate the info Ohlins, I will give it a try later

zx7rev 04-02-13 21:54

Hi Ohlins
Oh ... yes please ... any idea, yet, on the dates, so I can bang some holidays in, at work.

Ohlins 04-02-13 22:39

Hi...no problem...

I'll have a wee think about the dates after I discuss it with the dudes here,to see what suits most here. They work and have to wrap up after the end of summer.....Probably end of October for a benchmark...

Keep you posted...

Just found a 500km route south west of Marrakech which I'd like to give a try.

zx7rev 04-02-13 23:08

Ok, thanks. I was intending to do this, in October of last year, but got gazumped, by someone else booking the same dates, (first come, first served, kind of scenario), so I'll await your response. Are we allowed to post E-mail addresses? (I'm new), in which case I could let you have mine, to save hogging a post.

J-P-W 05-02-13 00:02

Morocco

Looks like I'll be there in April, just me on my Ten and friend on his GS1150. Not sure what we'll be doing there yet, but plan to ferry Portsmouth to Santander... I will, of course, be taking pictures and reporting back. I've never been outside the UK on two wheels before, should be a blast!

Ohlins 17-03-13 19:31

Great ...look forward to the pics..enjoy your time there.

:)
