Buying xtx tomorrow hopefully

Passes test back in June. Looking at a 2007 xtx 5k miles. Any thing I should look out for before I part with money? I want to be sure this bike will last, entertain, go anywhere include touring and keep me off autotrader for at least a couple of years. Can't wait to get on her been riding a wr125 for 11 months. Sad to see her go in some ways I think I might be over it by the time I get home. Also wandering who commutes on the xt and how far do you go?

Only do short commute on mine, but love it, if it's not actually raining heavy I'm out on her
Not great on long motorway stuff but only cause of the wind blast, I'm sure a higher screen would sort that, or if I was a little bit shorter ;)

An XT will do all those things for you, perfectly! :)

Exciting stuff..

A 5/6 year old bike with 5k miles sounds a rare find. You can tell be the wear and tear on the brake discs/c&s/tyres etc that all's in order. Pics to the forum will help with second opinions if you need them too.

The XT engine has mega mileage built into it as can be seen from the ones that are over the 100k (kms) mark, so there's nothing to worry about there. They're a really simple bike and at 5 years I'd encourage you to grease the head bearings/suspension linkages, check the cush drive rubbers, change all fluids and look for perishing on the tyres as they may be original.

Commuting and ride outs you can go as far as your backside allows you to really and perhaps for longer rides get a taller screen.

Assuming your bike to be is standard than there are more than enough mods to keep you interested in the years ahead.

I've not ridden the X but think the early ones surged a bit so you may want to look into that.

I was in Fowlers, Bristol last week and there was a really really nice blue XTX with gold wheels and almost no miles - I really liked it!

Pic's of the new bike and don't be shy to ask questions as there's a real wealth of knowledge right here..

Good Luck.

My commute is only 8 miles one way, but I always double that, the bike is made for it , puts a smile on me all the time, even when it's cold and wet, mind you, I do have heated grips and hand graders,
It's no rocket ship, but u will keep your licence,

She is out front!!! Rode home like a scared granny this afternoon. I have only ever riden 125cc bikes and I can't get over the wieght of the girl. Will I get used to this? Any tips other then get out and about tomorrow.

Ps thanks for all the advice. Not sure if any mods have been don't but I didn't feel any snatching or jerking in really heavy traffic today.

Any one near west Berkshire up for a ride out, I am new to area don't know any bikers yet.

I have abused my XTR for 2 years... never given a moment trouble..
had the motor full of water..took 15 mins to get it going..plug out pump the water out / drain air box... it started first push of the button...
weight is the only hard prob with them to curer.. a set of light weight cans helps getting rid of high weight... its got 38.000 hard ks on it now..

Hey John, welcome to the forum buddy. I am in bracknell/reading if you up for a ride sometime. Also went from a wr to the xt. I miss the bmx like qualities of the wr but the 660 hides it weight well once you get used to it. They are a brilliant all round bike and will scratch/commute/tour/etc happily all day long! Best thing you can do is to get riding and get to know her, a bit like having a new gf, got to work out where the g spots are ;)

SimonRoma 27-01-13 19:43

Yeah hi and welcome and u will get used to the weight soon enough, of course it all depends what you are used to riding. Take care and you will have loads of fun.

Getting on really well starting to throw her into corners. Don't even notice the weight any more. Also I used to live in ascot and we go down all the time to see mother in law. I will pm you next time to see if you are about.
