Hi from Danenbergs

Hi everyone!
I`m a Newbie here (joined just few days ago) and I would like to thank you all for your threads, topics and answers about Yamaha XT660 bikes!
The thing is that I actually do not own a xt660 yet, but I would like to. I`m saving money for xt for a while and I`d like to buy one this year. So now I`ll just read this forum and get as much information as I can :)
I`m from Latvia and I`m 23 yrs old. I`d characterize myself as a calm person but in the same time I like cars and bikes a lot. At the moment I do not have a bike but I own a car - VW Corrado VR6.

Why am I telling you that? :D Because I`d like to get a xtx. Its a beautiful, beautiful bilke and I`d say that I`m in love with the bike :D I do not care that it has less HP than other "supermoto like" bikes with same cc. I`ve red a lot about it but still I have some questions which I hope I`ll find in this xt660 forum (for example - What`s with the fuel injection system? I`ve red that it`s bad in low rpm, the bike does not respond quickly).
I`d like to have a reliable, agile, good looking everyday bike. I`d like to ride thought the city streets (80%), sometimes on a gravel road and forrest trails. I`d like to take my girlfriend on a small trips (so it has to be 2 seat bike). How comfortable is it to ride this bike 1,5h on a highway? Does it sounds like Yamaha XT660X? :)
Cheers!
P.s. Happy New Year!!

Hi mate, & welcome. I can't help much with the Xs specifically, nor the technical info so much, but based on what I've experienced with XTs in general I can honestly say that you should be well pleased when you finally get yours. Brilliant machines.

Time flies and more than 4 years have pased since I started this thread :)
Few weeks ago I bought my 1st 2005 Yamaha XT660X with 33k km on the clock. At the moment I realy like the bike. IMO this is a good bike for a beginer (yes this is my 1st bike) it handles very well and is quite easy to ride.

I have some technical questions..
1st about the rear wheel Cush Drive bushing.. I have slight movement between wheel and sprocket hub (~2mm). Should I replace them and can you recommend good cush drive which last longer? I have seen in videos that it is a good idea to lubricate them with teflon lube (teflon chain lube for example) so that they last longer.
2nd I have slight movement in the front fork.. At the moment it is hard to find the cause.. but I can feel it on gravel roads. I should check the steering berings, but is it possible that there is a movement in the front fork legs? Fornt Wheel bearings were replaced.

re the rear cush drive,a cheap and common 'remedy'is to pack the originals with an old inner tube..

re the forks...check the torque settings on the front wheel clamps and axle.

Wouldnt hurt none to go round the bike generally checking for any loose bolts/nuts as these are big singes at the end of the day and do vibrate

Is the front tyre directional?...looks odd to me but then again...

Dear XT660 friends,
Yesterday I decided to ckeck and lubricate steering bearings. There were slight free play when going on gravel and small, sharp bumps. And Here is the Result!!:

I guess previous XT660X users had never lubricated these bearings, The seals were damaged water came in and you can see the result. Rust everywhere. And I am completely shocked because the free play was not in the bearings, but in the TOP bearing seat. The bearing shaft seat is worn out and now I need new Bottom Yoke.

Guys Please maintain your XT660`s according to the Yamaha manual and relubricate these bearings as you should.

P.s. The tire rotation is correct. There is an arrow pointing forward :)
P.s.s. If you are interested in Dominator exhaust of my bike then here is a small clip - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T3PZA0u8H7E

Wow.....those bearings are in an awful state....amazing the bike was still rideable! Can the shaft seat not be machined and repaired....? Steve

So I repaired the steering. After the repairs everything about the steering feels fine now :)
Also today I fitted Kev fuel mod and I am actually very suprised how good it works :) Reduced surging a lot. Now while driving the Transition process between load and idle is smooth. I can advise this mod if you have surging issues.
