Steeringhead bearings

Anyone got a tip for removing the lower race from the frame? Is there a tool or trick? I've done the rest of the job even getting the lower bearing off the stem without too much fuss and the upper race tapped out no problem. When I put it back together I may even put some lube in it as obviously my bike was built during the great grease famine!

I ended up taking my steering head to the local garage, he charged me a fiver to prize it off.

I used a long bit of 12mm steel bar, and filed the end to just the right shape to engage on the edge of the bearing. It was still awkward.

I managed to put 2 cuts in the race with a dremel and a small cutting disc about the size of a 2p take care not to go all the way through it tapped out with a pry bar from the top without to much problem I did have to file the pry bar a bit to fit though.

Thanks folks, looks like I will be making a drift of sorts.

Hi Hermy,

I find my 450mm Draper tyre levers double nicely as a drift. (Just be careful to file off any burrs before using on tyres again) :icon_cheese:
