Power socket
 

I would like to fit a power socket, but know virtually nothing about fitting electrics to bikes, so not sure what to look for.
I see Touratech has a small socket that looks to fit on the Ten nicely but is a smaller socket I think and therefore dont know what fits into it? Everything I would want to use like a satnav ,mobile phone charger etc.... is of a plug that fits into cigarette sized socket, so Im confused... not that it takes much !!:119:

Also the Tenere doesnt seem to have many places to fit an accesory socket, so other than the one from Touratech, Im not sure what other options I have

The 'small' socket is a DIN 16A unit, much better than a cigar type.

The DIN 16A unit fits perfectly into the area behind the indicators, there is a flat surface and the wires all sit inside the panel (the one the indicators are fixed to), and it's easy to remove too.

The 16A connectors are different, but what I (and many others) do is to use a single 16A connector fitted to a multiway cigar type, so you can charge your phone/satnat or run your heated clothing etc from.

You can buy these as complete socket / plug kits in Halfords too (or Maplin, RS, etc)

As for wiring it in.... you could wire it directly to the battery, but best to have a relay fitted that connects to the lighting circuit thus: ->

Don't take too much notice of the wire colours, just for reference (and you'l rarely get two people agreeing which colour should be which) - you can use all the same wire (just label it well)

As above - don't be put off by the size of the DIN type socket, it is pretty much the bike industry standard power supply these days. They are much more robust, more watertight, have better contacts, are more compact and smaller than cigarette lighter sockets.

I've mounted two, one in each pod behind the front indicators, the right hand one is wired (as GULG suggests) off the lighting circuit via a relay to give a switched supply for heated kit etc. The one on the right is direct to the battery so I have a power source without the key and into which I can plug the Optimate for battery charging.

I wouldn't bother with the Touratech kit, its hugely over priced. The socket they supply in the kit (which is a good one mind) is a Hella model and available more cheaply elsewhere. FYI I got my sockets and plugs (Hella) from an online Chandlery supplier (a good source for all waterproof electrical kit).

You could also mount a DIN socket on the dash panel (measure carefully for clearance)

OK cheers , so Ive now established that its cheap enough to fit a smaller one... a DIN 16a..... but how do I charge stuff that utilises a bigger cigarette sized lead... i.e my phone and my GPS... Sorry if its ultimate stupidity ???

See this is where I get confused this is a smaller one with a bigger wired in ... right ???Why not just wire in a bigger one ???

Of course, it's up to you, but most people opt for the DIN socket and many bike manufacturers fit the DIN as standard meaning it is easy to take your accessories from one bike to another if you want to.

I have made a long "extension" cable so I can keep my phone, iPod, camera etc.. charging in my tank bag or top box.

...mainly because the bigger type is much harder to locate neatly and as I mentioned they just aren't as waterproof or robust - the DIN type is simply a better solution.

Most of my 12v accessories I have cut off the cigarette lighter plug and changed to DIN type, for my phone (for which I couldn't remove the original plug) I use something like this...

You can also get the above with multiple outlet too.

I have a made a longer lead so the plug end can reach into my tank bag (it also has a more substantial compact water proof plug)
