battery access on the ABS?
Hello all!
I was in for a suprise The other day when I was going to connect a battery charger indicator/connector on my bike.... lifted the seat, only to find the someone had stolen my battery!!! :ninja: quickly ran in to the house...looked up my manual... and behold!! on the xt660za the battery is move to the very convenient place....UNDER THE TANK! what about if one would be in need of starterhelp....:icon_scratch: anyone around here that have had any experience with getting access to the battery on the abs version please let me have some info...please Best regards n011an |
I believe there are two remote terminals specifically for charging the battery behind the the right (might be left?) hand grey plastic tank cover, whether they would be any good for a jump start I wouldn't know, but they do go direct to the battery. The battery is different on the ABS bike, being a VLRA type it requires a different kind of charger that compensates for ambient temperature.

Thanks for Youre reply pleiades! :038:
I found 1 access point with the 30Amp mainfuses on the left side " forktunnel" (front of the tank). after a tight fit I finally got my chargerplug fitted...haven't connected the charger yet, I have the Optimate3 but still have my doubts if it is ok to use? Best regards n011an |

Your best bet is to contact Optimate and get a definitive answer. |
I am reviving an old thread as I have exactly the same problem.
Has anyone else had success in charging the XT660ZA battery without moving the tank? This person seems to (my Danish is not perfect) have accessed the battery by partly removing the tank, but Pleiades statement in this thread seems much more attractive to me. http://www.tenere.dk/forumnew/forum_posts.asp?TID=6488 I am not very close to my bike right now, so I will happily take suggestions. If someone wants to share their results, that’d be great! |
There is a connection on left frontside of tank. I have attach a Ctek charger cable to that point and have no problem to charge my battery.

Thanks, I will definitely check this in the weekend.

That was correct. I had no problem charging at the location Surfsixten mentioned. Thanks.

I wanted to connect some accories directly to the battery, and basically
Then i could move the tank enough backwords to remove the plastic arround the lock and access the battery terminals - but not enough to remove the battery If just for charging i would also use the other points, but i have also fitted a socked for a charger below the seat. |
Thanks majland; that could prove useful in the future.

If someone is interested I can tell that this connection on front of tank is not direct to battery. There is no power on it when you run starter. I know that after I try to connect a Scottoiler to this, and all works OK I start engine and my Scottoiler was reseted.

Yes I have noticed that You can't jumpstart with that connection. After week's of hesitation I finally replaced my original battery with a JMT Lithium HJTZ10S-FP-I from off-the-road.de and installed a charge/jumpstart lead it took a good hour removing all the plastic around the tank and lifting the tank. You can access the battery box by just lifting and moving the tank slightly back. The guy who designed the battery placement on the abs version should have his head examined.

The f*ucking parking switch option drain my battery.
I also didn't found the battery. Anyone please can show me how to charging terminal look like? |
Hi! I'm also searching for a sollution on how to connect a battery charger on the ABS model. A picture showing where to connect it would be much appreciated :-)
|
I would suggest to do as i did ;-)
Connect a charging socket directly to the battery and just leave the socket under the seat. That way you won't have idiots blowing you fuses by filling the socket with some metal to short it out. And you can easily get to it and just by removing the seat. |
Hej Majland i Danmark :-)
Thx for your reply. I was hoping that it would be possible to connect a charger to the battery without having to loosen the fuel tank. But might be I would have to... The main bolts holding the tank to the frame seems to be hard to loosen on my bike. Any tricks? Hilsen Georg i Norge :-) |

And pull some wires to below the seat when you are at it ... But yes it should be possible to connect a charger on the lower front side of the engine behind a plastic cover (trough a 30A fuse) - i just did it the other way to have an easily accessable socket for further use - Winter riding is Denmark is not so good for the bikes because of the salt the put on the road. |
Thanks again majland, I followed your instructions on how to dismantle/loosen the fuel tank yesterday, and it worked perfect! Voltage of the battery was just 1,5 V - and everything was working perfect when I put the bike in the garage 1 month ago. So the question is; what has happened?? I will recharge the battery and hopefully everything works...

The charging circuit on some units can drain the battery - even without the GPS present. But i have accidentally left it with parking light on along with heated grips and aux light- My battery survived but not recommend doing that on a regular basis ... |
No GPS or other power consuming accessories. And the parking lights was not left on. So what drained the battery is still a mystery. But now i have the cable ready under the seat for charging the battery

I've bought a LED indikator that i'll fit this vinter http://gammatronixltd.com/epages/bae...ries/Category1 So that is is only on with ignition on - it also draw some power .... |
Could have been a relay. One thing draining a bit of power is the "locked"/"anti-theft" indicator in the instrument panel. Keeps blinking red for a couple of days - but then stops.
Seems like the battery is keeping it's charge now - still 12,5V 3 days after I disconnected the charger. |
