How many punctures have you had?
Just wondering, because people always seem to stress about puncture repairs, but, as I mentioned in another thread, I've only had two in ten years and something like 70,000 miles of riding, at least 10% of which has been off-tarmac.
Since everyone has been riding for different periods of time, the poll options are expressed as punctures per year or years per puncture. Please add detail in replies if you want. |
So for me, I've ridden something like 70,000 miles over ten years, and had two punctures.
Both were screws picked up in rear wheels while commuting in UK cities. I've done quite a lot of off-tarmac riding, including racing, on heavy bikes, and never punctured a tyre. I have pinched two tubes while changing tyres, but that doesn't count :D |
All bar one of the punctures I've had have been on tarmac. Every single puncture (including the sole off road one), has been caused by some sort of discarded metallic object!

What is it - a knitting needle!?

Nearly 50,000m on the Tenere and only 1 puncture on the rear in Argentina. Small tack. Most punctures occur on the rear due to the front tyre running over it, flicking it up at an angle and shoving it in the rear.
I was a mechanic for 20 years and once repaired a car tyre. It had a split in the tread about 2 inches long. Took the tyre off to find a bent brake pad inside ! |
In over 330,000 miles I've lost count. Easily into double figures and always the back tyre and always a nail or screw. I once had 5 in a single year.

Wood Screws every time. Always rear.

In my new bike any puncture yet, I use a tyre selant gel inside the tube to prevent it.

I would prob avarage 2 a year..always somewhere
out on the trails... plus 5 or 6 tyre changes on 2 bikes a years... so a tyre repaire is no longer a issue.. I find it harder getting the wheels off & on the bike .. fixing the puntcure is the easy bit.. |
My last puncture was on my old XJR1200
It was:
- the front tyre (all but stuffed anyway), probably wouldn't have happened if it was new/lots of tread tyre. - a short and pointed piece of bone (didn't see it go in don't know how long it was going down for it just started to get sloppy on the corners) but ever since then I make a habit of avoiding road kill. - waited on the side of the road for the NRMA on a wet sunday afternoon for about 2 1/2 hours - fixed by NRMA by some green stuff in a can that the tyre place hated and I was on my way in about 5 minutes - rode about 200 more km on the temporary repair before I got the tyre replaced. |
Just the one, commuting, in the rear.
Using the gutter going past a que of cars, poo. Marcus |
