Maxxis Supermoto death weave!

Hey all just a little advice/warning- I recently changed to some Maxxis supermoto tyres, got a blinding price on them of 113 for a pair fitted and balanced, so thought, excellent, should be ok.

Till you exceed 80mph that is......then you get the almighty handlebar shake and shimmy. I did a little investigation and turns out it's the rear tyre's odd profile (tall) that's to blame, and apparently others have experienced it too.

Not much can be done, some say running low pressures aliviates the problem, but won't fix.

So in case anyone else considers these tyres, exercise caution on the XTX, they don't suit, and it's a shame as they are vey grippy with great traction at lower speeds.

To you Maxxis Supermoto - :rocketwhore:

Thanks for the heads up, & what a shame - I was thinking of getting some for my next tyres!!!!

bald_pig 10-08-12 10:07

I was looking at them fancy diamond ones :D

CaptMoto 10-08-12 10:10

Ok, you've said it yourself, run low pressure, it does fix the problem, but you need to appreciate these are tyres designed for supermoto track days, hence the extra grip and there is also another factor, these will not last you more than 600 miles because their compound is very soft and will wear out pretty quick.

So to recap run your pressure max 28psi and you will loose all weave, however these are not designed to exceed speeds of 85mph therefore are not really suitable for road use on the XTX.

The rear one lasted me only 400 miles before it was shot, commuting in London's traffic. The front one lasted a lot longer.

I then switched to Avon Distanzia and lived happily ever after.

CaptMoto 10-08-12 10:12

To all other here who are looking for tyres, guys if you see the polls we have run 90% of XTX users prefer Avon Distanzia's they are the best tyres for these bikes.

feck 10-08-12 11:55

You boys are tripping. I am on my second set of these and have no problems. Run 26psi up front and 30psi on the rear and they run sweet. Better grip than the distanzia, awesome wet performance and a nice high profile for super quick turn ins. Appreciate that these are derived from track but adjusted for road use and u will understand the tyre. I got 3k out of my last rear so I fail to understand how ppl can say they got less than a grand out of a tyre, must be their riding style although I do 70miles a day and I ain't conservative ;) also should be noted that if u really hold a tight grip on your handlebars you will accentuate any minor wobble into something major.. So to summarise, treat it like a motard tyre, ride up high and don't be grabby on the bars and you will find these an awesome tyre.

feck 10-08-12 12:09

Just to clarify I am running the road friendly medium compound M6118 and M6119 otherwise known as the Maxxis Presa supermotard :)

coffeebaron 11-08-12 10:46

Glad to see some other inputs guys- Capt, I agree that dropping the pressure would probably help, but as I ride 2-up all the time I'm not convinced such low tyre pressure would be good, especially for the tyres life or that of the innertube.

@ Feck: I do believe these are the same set as yours, and interesting to hear your verdict on getting on with them. I'm not one to take a light hold on the bars sadly, although I do ride my XTX sat up high towards the front.

I'm going to be changing them today for some Michelin Power race i'd used previously, mileage may not be great, but damn they suit my style of riding.

Whats a Michelin Power Race??

coffeebaron 12-08-12 12:57

feck 12-08-12 17:37

Those look interesting, let us know how you get on. Took the bike up a couple of lanes today and the Maxxis performed beautifully in the dry dusty conditions!

coffeebaron 12-08-12 21:30

I really wish I could have found trust in those Maxxis, but they just wern't for me- though I'd reccommend the Supermaxx they do, nice intermediate tyre.

The Michelin are great, in fact I feel they are overkill for this bike lol- they will allow me to easily take corners at 90+and lean further than I've done yet on the XTX

I'll have to take some pics after a recent ride.

bald_pig 13-08-12 12:40

All I can say about the diablo rosso's i got atm is that I can easily scrape the pegs round roundabouts :P

rear is knackered though, a new rosso 2 will be 120 fitted.

I know its a different bike but I run these awsome tires on my 1992 Husqvarna TC 610, that I converted to supermoto with a pair of cagiva mito wheels, I ran this for 3 years and 30,000 miles as my only form of transprt 25 miles a day commute, and toured on the ******, ( ever toured on a bike that HAS to be serviced every 10 hours )

I regularly saw 3500 miles out of the rear, and double.that from the front, two up with luggage, showing sports bikes up on the twistys. And generally riding like a knob. Loved the grip the tire provided whatever the weather was doing.

The Huskys considerably lighter and taller than the XT 109kg with no fuel, so that might have helped?? Anyhoo my 2p worth lol heres some piccies

Before paint and with my gfs mini me supermoto, 160cc Welsh pit bike. (stomp)

Piccies taken over last 2 years as I fitted upside down Forks and a few other mods.

And incase anyone spotted, its so light because it holds.1 litre of oil and only has kick start, which is on the bloody left lol. Its a world away from my Tenere but its a dedicated nutter machine :-D I love it.

Thanks for looking
Jon

Maxxis Presa Supermotard..

Well, somewhere around the 700 mile mark, these tyres are coming off!!
I really cant get on with them.
Feels like I'm riding along a ridge, left a bit, right a bit, left a bit, right a bit more. Even worse with a pillion.
I've enjoyed the occasional slide out from the back end, but even those occasions seemed uncalled for.
The tyre guy said to put 34psi in both. That was awful. Got maybe 29 in both now and is better, but still far from stable and confidence giving.
I've tried varying the pressures, even the rear shock preload (just in case).
Maybe I got a duff tyre, but I doubt it.

Maxxis Presa Supermotard - From me get the thumbs down for the XTX.

Not to mention my bike tries really hard to spit me off at anything over 60MPH.
Just the slightest wobble of the bars gets it going, Scary if you not expecting it.

Schnidely 27-05-14 22:24

Just a thought...how are your steering head bearings? If they're ******ed they'll cause everything you've mentioned.

Right, Couldn't answer until I was sure.
Indeed, I had checked steering, replaced folk oil, changed shock pre-load, eaten more pies, nothing helped, tried running from 24psi to 34psi, nothing.

Friday, Finally, Avon Distanzias.

What can I say.

Now I can go 70mph again, woohoo. and in a straight line.
