How Many Miles
How far will the Z do when the gauge flashes ? haven"t noticed but does it have a light aswell ( i must be dumb) :icon_joker:
|
No light, just a flashing gauge and the F-trip starts. I've got 40 miles out of mine so far on F-trip. No pushed it much further than that so far, but I think that the reserve amount is approx 1 gallon.
|
I think it was 6.8L. I normally ride ca. 130km on reserve. The max I had to fill up was 24.6L.
|
I've taken the bike to 70mls on the f-trip,, then I chickened out and filled up, I recall that there was still a few litres left though.
The Tenere fuel gauge was a black op by BMW, who wanted to try and confuse the hell out of Tenere owners thus making their own bike appear superior. Never trust your fuel gauge, it's evil and it lies.... |

Too true. Mine used to be predictable, but now it seems to be overly pessimistic. Still gets better than 20km/l with panniers on in general use, but the bars plunge towards reserve earlier. Sigh. When will I ever learn that Italian (European?) bikes are a menace to the mind.:surrender: |
So a safe 40 miles then on flashing gauge :114:
|
Yup :angel1:
|
heres how mine works
when it starts flashing it starts counting up how many miles on reserve if i fill it then it takes around 15 litres ..leaving 7 call it 6 ive had 78 mile counted and it still only took 20 litres now this will depend on how you ride but if you figure your av mpg you will have a idea how far that 6litres or more will take you |
on F-Trip ive had mine to about 42 miles then i passed a garage so filled up, but i was amazed how much was still left in the tank - i could of easily done 30 miles more....which is nice to know but i tend not to go over 40 miles on F-Trip...play it safe :icon_razz:

Just been looking through, on old threads, and also been checking out the fuel consumption of mine. I thought there was lots of stories of everyone getting 60 plus mpg.... I must be giving it too much !!! The best Ive had on 3 tanks lately is 47 mpg. The fuel guage has flashed at around 160 ish miles and at 180ish Ive filled up mainly due to having more than 40/50 mile to home and Ive fitted in between 17 and 18 lits.
I always thought Id read 300 miles is easily acievable on a tank but Im guessing with my riding 230 is my max |
What's your route and what indicated speed are you riding at wide?
In my old job I was doing 9 miles each way of dual carriageway with plenty of roundabouts and was sitting at indicated 80/5k rpm which returned 46-49mpg. Changed jobs and now do 25 miles each way including M4 and sit at indicated 76/4.5k rpm which returns 57-59mpg. Before, I was like you and would be filling up at 165/180 miles, now it's generally 215 before it starts flashing. |
Previous tanks were a mix of stop start/warm up on drive stuff with the runs being a few 10 mile commutes and a run of 60/70 miles, so I can understand the 45 ish mpg. The tank full yesterday was a solid day run down around Pembroke, filled up in the morning in Cardiff, ran at 5k revs down to Carmarthen to meet buddy and then did back roads, by the time the fuel light came on at 170ish miles I was heading home so did a bit more and ended up fueling up in Swansea to make sure I got home... that tank worked out at a tad over 47 mpg .
I am running a kev mod, set at 4 o clock position dna stage 1 an 2. Did expect better after some of the stuff I d read |
Is the cat out? Made a big difference with mine.
|
Cat is at present still fitted, maybe next mod !!

Sorry ?? Not following your thought ??

You're changing the fuelling set up so the bike is going to be flowing more fuel. You're never going to get the economy of a standard set up.
The trade off for more power is less economy. |
Ok guess that makes sense. I thought i had read the mods made it more fuel efficient

I was thinking after I wrote that and only one bike I've ever worked on has become more economical after tuning, and that was the Caponord I had that I used Tuneboy on to map the ECU. All the others have always seen a drop in economy.

and i also read that the mod is supposed to improve the economy. |
I also used to get around the 220 miles to reserve, then fitted a DNA filter and Kev mod set @4 o clock. The troubler is that I can now get power from 2500rpm and the torque seems to be more apparent. I have an MTC single can as well and the sound on hard acceleration is possitively addictive, hence I now only get late 190's to 200 to the gallon but the smile is bigger!:laughing8:
Problem now is that I can rip up a TKC in about 2500 miles:crybaby: Your call!:Pyshic_C5UYG8: |
My story is....
Got the stage 2 DNA and Kev's fuel mod at 4 o'clock with twin MTC pipes and I get around 180 on my normal commute. I regularly go 50 miles on reserve but last time I risked it to 60 there was about a litre and a bit still in.
My working out gives me approx 10.8 miles to the litre on short trafficey runs and more like 11.5 - 12 miles to the litre on longer smoother runs. I do a rough calculation in my head of 10 miles to the litre (for easy maths) and that always gives me a head room to not run out of fuel (so far anyway). Before the mods it was 220 - 230 before reserve and 280 - 300 range which is more like 13 miles to the litre. I'm no way going back to standard for a mile a litre!!! I'm happy with the way it rides now. |
So it seems most people use theres set at the 4 o'clock position, which poduces slightly lower MPG.
So if you were going on a long motorway trip or any ride were your just mile munching....could you just set turn it dont to zero? so your bike would be back to standard? |
The XT660 motor does not get the best fuel consumption when the A/F ratio is around 14:1 to 14,7:1, if you want the best fuel economy + extra HP & torque then you need to an A/F ratio of 13,6:1, for max HP & torque you aim for 13.2:1.
|
Hi all, not one for monitoring fuel and distance thingies but i've fitted the Kev Mod and set it at 6oclock and noticed a big differance riding , but whats that going to do to the fuel consumsion as it seems most of you set yours at 4oclock !!!!

You're not alone - I've also got mine set a 6 and average 57/58 to the gallon, dropping to 55 if I ride hard and nudging 60 if I'm bimbling around. In hot weather (above 20C) I'll go down to 5 o'clock and below 10C I run it at 7 o'clock as the effects of the series wired variable resistor on the air temperature sensor readings aren't linear.
Interestingly, before the fuel mod/DNA filter (in stock trim) I averaged exactly the same! However, that isn't exactly conclusive as the motor has loosened up somewhat since modifying the filtering and fuelling. Don't bother much with the fuel gauge these days - I just fill up around 200 miles on the trip regardless. Now I come to think of it, I spent the first 20 years of motorcycling on bikes without fuel gauges and I never ran out once! |
Re: How Many Miles
Ive upped mine around to6/7 o clock. Not sure but feels smoother than 4. Should it go further around when its cold ???

In order to maintain the same differential between real ambient and measured intake temperature (in other words fooling the ECU to think its colder than it is) you do have to increase the setting as temperatures drop. Generally its not a massive issue as ambient temperatures in the UK don't vary greatly, so realistically you'd be OK and within range keeping it the same. However, it becomes more of an issue at the extremes: If ambient temperatures drop below -5 you do need to start dialling in much bigger increases in additional resistance to gain the same level of "ECU fooling" you had at say 20C. The same applies if you get temperatures above 30C, but it goes the other way, the resistance needs reducing in much bigger steps. Having said all that, just dial in whatever makes the bike feel best and you won't be far wrong! ;) |
Well just filled her up again after fuel light came on yesterday at 162 miles and it got filled at 172 miles... I know I dont need to do it that early, but Im checking it out over a period so I know where I am , and Ive put in 17.12 lits. So my calcs have got it at 45.5 mpg, this has been with 60 ish miles of constant M/way and then stop start commute stuff, so Im going to work on 200 miles is a good time to start thinking of finding fuel from now on. I would also guess that warmer sunny days........... if we ever get them, improvements will come !!
