Speaking of engine cutting out.
I have a 2010 660 tenere, bought from new and not messed with.
I have had the engine "miss a beat" after long rides at high speeds. Its like the fuel has been cut for one stroke and if cranked over on the black top it can be rather un-nerving. This has only happened when l have been giving it the berries on the road for about 2 hours. If l back off for a while (cool down) it doesnt come back. Is this just a heat problem made worse with hot air getting sucked into the airbox? I live in Western Australia so its never too cold. It happened the other day at 18 deg celsius and 135kph for a few hours. Could this be fixed with Kevs' fuel mod? Thanks Rod Next stop - MT21's That will slow me down. |
Hi there, first we need to give you the lowdown on what is happening with your bike, which is a commmon problem covering the whole XT660 range.
The issue is that these bikes come restricted from the factory to comply with government emission rules. Their first approach to restriction is to virtually choke the bike, by using a snorkle on the filter and a constrictly intrinsecate air box. In few words the bike is starved of air flow, therefore there are times that when on either high revolutions or the opposite way on very low revs once the engine is hot, fuel goes to the combustion chamber without enough air to combust so to speak and that is when the "choking" occurrs. The Kev Mod was designed by Kev (who is an expert Volkswagen Engineer Foreman in Brisbane Australia) to trick the ECU by altering the send temp of the AF thus allowing more fuel into the mixture. Way back since 2006 when Kev first introduced this mod it has been very succesfull and everyone who fitted one has praised the simplicity and functionality of it. In addition to the Kev mod it is recommended to fit a DNA stage 2(3) airbox cover filter, which opens up the airbox to the much needed air that will allow the bike to have the intended air influx. That, together with the Kev Mod or a more expensive powercommander will make this bike a high performing engine as intended by its designers. You can see details about this side cover filter on the link below, this filter was designed by Dino Nikolaidis, MD of DNA Filters Ltd, in collaboration with us here at :660: specifically to modify / open up the airbox with a water tight safe to use high flow quality filter http://www.xt660.com/site/node/324 http://www.xt660.com/site/files/imag...OW.preview.jpg http://www.xt660.com/site/files/imag...02.preview.jpg http://www.xt660.com/site/image/view/323/_original http://www.xt660.com/site/image/view/318/_original http://www.xt660.com/site/image/view/319/_original |
Also check the fuel tank breather, could be kinked.:smilies0966:

Also check your air filter is it blocked? New spark plug?
As the Captain mentioned you can get your beast to run much better with a bit more air & fuel. |
Thanks Guys very very much for a comprehensive answer.
Now where did l hide my credit card. Time to subscribe. Filter was a bit dirty but not blocked, might have to look closer to find the breather, definatly need some more air. Will get the fuel mod and some DNA Air as soon as l have paid off the $1000 l spent last week on parts and clothing. Forma Adventure boots, very comfy. Went fishing in my new Rally Cross Pro dacks today in the sun, plus 400k yesterday, love 'em. Waiting for my crash bars, centre stand, rear brake leaver and high front guard from OTR Germany to arrive. Thanks Guv, Kev. |
Tried to subscribe with my AUS MC but got denied :angryfire:
Will try again tommorrow or await your command master. |
Could it be possible that you're hitting a rev limiter? I only ask as you say it only happens when you're 'giving it the berries' and the same thing happened to me yesterday whilst I was 'making progress':glasses1:

Nah wasnt the rev limiter, i was only giving it the berries, not thrashing the rings off it. :080:
But i like your thinking. Not good to ride a b10 that hard i dont reckon, or any bike for that matter.:seasaw: |

Hope that is still an option or did l just give my ten quid to Arthur friggin Daley? Pay Pal sucks worse than KLR's. Used a debit card. Fixed. (note to readers... buy Arthur Daleys' "Guide To Doing It Right." Great read, only available second hand.) |
