Going Shopping

Don't know if this is the right place for this, but here we go.

I'm planning to upgrade my ride to a new 660 Tenere end July, and want to fit it and myself out completely for adventure touring (whilst my redundancy payout lasts). I don't want to spend a fortune, but I don't want anything cheap/substandard either. I'd really appreciate anybody's feedback on what they reckon would be the best options for the following bits:

Bike
sump guard
crash bars (for engine/tank?)
other worthwhile guards
panniers & top box (currently thinking Metal Mule)
handguards (Barkbusters?)
power socket
spot/flood lights
pivot footpegs
other considerations/suggestions (will get the key mods thing when can afford it)

Personal
helmet (Arai XD/ Shark Evoline 2?/other?)
jacket & pants combo (got 17yr old Belstaff gear, but bit ratty & no armour)
boots
other considerations/suggestions?

Emergency/Recovery Gear
tool kit (get a commercial offering of home assembled?)
compressor?
other considerations/suggestions?

Camping (Confession: ok, I'm a bit of a pack-rat)
tent (saw one where the bike can be parked inside - bit of **** you reckon?)
sleeping mat (can probably get away with using my army sleeping bag)
stove (thinking jetboil)
other consideration/suggestions?

So there you go, not much really then. Thanks in advance of any tips you can provide. Cheers.

Hey there, may I suggest you check out the ADV-Riders XT660Z forum, it's a great place for finding out suitable mods and brands/parts for creating a shopping list. Obviously I'd also suggest checking the forum sections here out, but tend to find the yanks on ADV rider have lots of cash to throw around, and as such gives you a good 'catalouge' to work from :)

No, not much really....

Go to www.offtheroad.de they have most of the stuff you are after, prices are very competitive but delivery can be SLOW. They are agents for most of what you are looking for including Pivot Pegs.

Touratech will have panniers etc., as do Metal Mule.

www.AdventureMoto.com.au can help with most of your other gear, including the Tenere tent that you bike will fit in.

Power sockets/RAM mounts pretty cheap off ebay.

For your helmet also look at Shoei Hornet. Lots of guys wearing them. Including me.

Tool kit's pretty good, but you'll need a 14mm Allen/Hex key to remove the front axle (not one in the toolkit).

Best advice I was given is to ride the bike for a while & then spend your readies on the things that annoy you most first (for example you may hate the suspension & want to upgrade that first). You may find that the light is good & that a HID upgrade will provide a tidier solution that add-on LEDs.

Good luck, post some photos of your mods... Boneman

+1

Ride the thing first and get some hours in the saddle - you'll soon enough know what you need.

Here's a handy thread on what tools are useful to carry...

Thanks for the suggestions guys. Now that you mention it, it'll prob pay to wait a bit before upgrades on bike. I'd like to be able to negotiate some OEM accessories prices when I go buy the bike though.

Perhaps I should be asking which OEM bits would be worthwhile? I think I read somewhere in one of these forums that much of it is overpriced &/or pretty ordinary.

Still open to tips on personal gear (sounds like the Shoei helmet will added to the list). Anybody had any experience/opinions on the Shark Evoline helmets for adventure touring?

The Shark helmets just don't last 2 years, the pading gives way, been there twice done that won't be back again.

I get my helmets from these guys.

The best money you can spend on your bike is fuel :-).... Write that down!
