Is this flaking normal?
1 Attachment(s)
Washed the bike today and saw that the paint on the swingarm is flaking off.
Is this normal, or something I should put in a warranty claim for? |
What year is the bike, how many miles, what sort of riding have you been doing (off roading, winter riding, winter riding with little washing), do you use any WD40 or similar once the bikes washed, or any other information on the same lines??
Just helps the guys who have experience of the Tenere to know if its standard wear or something they might have dealt with before with their bike |
hi, nope that's not normal. yes mine has marks where the tyre has dragged stuff through and scrapes on the lower parts. as mine is used [for darren-abused] all year round, I seldom clean, when clean apply acf50.
is there any warranty? gulgo had his swingarm replaced when paint came off. worse case scenario clean to bare metal, roughen with 320 grade sand paper, apply self etch base coat, then black paint finish. job done bernard |

Not normal I'd say, but it's only ally so a small brush and some decent black paint will fix it. Don't think I'd bother replacing the whole swing arm.
|
The bike is barely a year old, and has gone 9000 km. It's been ridden proper offroad two-three times where some mud has gathered there, but only for a few hours until I washed it off. I still think the paint should hold.
I'll check with my dealer and ask to have it mended. |
Tell us what he says. BUT I bet that you guys have loads of salt on the roads????

thats not normal at all .. it looks like brake fluid spillage
not at all saying thats what caused it but it looks like it...dont ask grrr |

Brake fluid.. Perhaps. Hopefully not, as it's only ever been serviced at the dealers, and haven't changed the fluid to my knowledge. I'll keep you posted. |

Mine too looked like it was a brake fluid spill, but on the other side (so no chance really). It was down to bad preparation of the raw alloy, and no etching/primer coat. The first place the flaking was evident, was where the wash off the tyre hit the swing arm, so I wasn't much bothered and accepted it might be down to my riding, O took out the wheel, put a key onto the alloy, cleaned off with cellulose thinners and applied Plastikot, which was the closest colour I could get to the swingarm. It lasted about a month before more came off, it was then I went to the dealer. I pointed it out to my dealer, he thought it was shocking and pushed through a replacement swing arm. I would have been happy with a re-paint, well actually, I think a repaint by a body shop would have been a better finish, but Yamaha went for a replacement swing arm, and unusually asked for the old one to be shipped back to them. Unusual as most times the dealer is told to dispose of warranty parts, so they must have wanted the old swingarm to do some checks on. |
....perhaps they put it back on the production line?
|
or bunged it on ebay!
