XTZ screen buffeting
Does anyone else have an issue with the airflow over the screen ?
Im 5ft 10" and the aerodynamics around the screen are leaving me deaf and with a headache. Ive tried it with an Arai helmet and a Bell helmet and the Bell is better but theres still a lot of bad airflow around the screen. Has anyone tried other screens or bolt on deflectors? Any Recommendations. |

Mine used to give me a bad headache from the buffeting too, removed the screen and no more headache! try it and see if it helps, i then cut it in half and still got a little headache but not as bad!

I had the same problem, 5.10" on a good day.
Skidmarx do a taller screen. No more buffeting. And made in England! |
I was also getting it but found it was coming from slope at front
Of fuel tank. Next time you ride put your hand behind handlebars Where fuel tank slopes up at front and you will feel so much air Being directed straight at your head. I blocked front just under headlight with some neatly cut perspex And it stopped buffeting straight away. Give it a try. Worked for me matey |
Replaced mine with an XT1200Z solved the screen buffeting and a lot more comfortable/faster to boot .. :D
Slight pishtaking aside it made me realise how bad/tiring the buffeting on the XT660z was as I used it for runs to Leeds and back, I had sort of ignored it thinking it was the helmet (Hornet DS) that was the problem and not the screen . |
Cheers for the replies gents.
I hadn't thought about the air coming up through the fork legs but I think it's a mayor factor. I'm going try some spacers between the screen and the head light to see if I can tip the screen a bit and get some air running behind it. I think I will have a go at blocking off some of the air 'passages' behind the head lights and up the fork legs. I like the size and design of the screen so don't want to change it just yet. If I can pick up a cheap one I might drill a few holes in it and see how it works |
this old chestnut again......a great bike spoiled.....
i fitted the givi screen and worked for me....just a little tourer looking |
screen buffeting
its worth reading all the threads on this,i am 5ft 11 and i have the givi screen, touratech spoiler, tankbag and handlebar bag from hein gerike. With these its ok and with ear plugs it cuts the noise down. You just have to find what works for you

I could write great lengths about this, but I'll try and keep it short.
My short friend tried my bike with the original screen and said he got headaches from the turbulence. I didn't notice myself. Later I put on a taller screen and lived with the turbulence for the longest time, but only at higher speeds. Believe it or not it's just recently that I put back the original screen and thought hohey! turbulence is gone! So, with the original screen your head is probably right where the wind travels over your screen. Like mine was with the taller screen since I am quite tall (2 meters). I read all about putting bird comb where the forks are, making plastic plates to cover it or putting on huge tank bags to stop wind coming up the forks. In the end it turned out to be as simple as putting on the original screen so the wind hits my chest/neck instead of my helmet. I also read someone chopped the original screen to make the same effect. May be worth a try? Just take it off completely and go for a test run first, only be aware of the difference between normal wind and actual turbulence that shakes your head so much that it almost blurs your vision. |
I've never had an issue with buffeting. But then I have always had the HG handlebar bag on the bike, since the first mile.
10 from HG, and even if it doesn't work, you still get a handy storage pod... http://www.hein-gericke.co.uk/tuareg-lenkertasche.html |
screens / buffeting / windnoise

http://www.xt660.com/After checking out the various options available for alternative screens to cure the buffetting / wind noise issues I have been having with the bike I decided I would be loathed to spend 90 on a taller / shorter / x creen type of thing and decided to chop up the existing one.
Why can an aftermarket company sell a screen for 90 when the OE one from Yamaha is only 40 ? any way ive attached some photos of what ive done. The slot was the first mod as Ive seen plenty of companys doing this to try and reduce the lower pressure area behind the screen. That seemed to work a lttle bit. Then I decided that if I could get more air behind the screen it was nearly equalise the lower pressure area that was banging around my head. I would like to make it clear that I know naff all about aerodynamics but have a basic idea of whats happening at 60 mph. Any how basically what you see is where we are up to present and I think its a bit of an improvement on the standard screen. Its a work in progress but I will plod on and seen if I can improve it anymore. If it all goes pear shaped I will stick an new yammy screen on and no one will know! |
I like that - good ingenuity :023:

Wind from where?
The most annoying/dangerous buffetting I've encountered is when following & trying to overtake large pantech/B Double trucks (who are doing over 100 kph). This doesn't seem to occur, nearly as much when riding open road without other traffic! :icon_surprised: So, is all this buffetting caused from other vehicles & exasperated by the design of the fuel tank & screen ? |
A possible answer
Did some research this arvo, up & down the highway following various size trucks at different distances. What I've basically come up with is, stay off the main roads which carry a lot of large heavy vehicles & wind buffetting will be mini
mised
. So just use the big T's for what we bought them for, riding on the back roads :icon_biggrin: |
No screen worked for me but I like having a screen so that was not an option. I tried the plate under the headlight. That helped marginally, but after fitting spotties that was removed.
Next was repositioning the screen tilting back further (I thought the screen looked too vertical). Thought I had success but eventually realised it still wasn't right. Next was cutting down the screen by an inch or so. Then another inch or so. Still no good. A new higher wider screen should solve everything... Nope. So last but not least tried a wind deflector mounted to the handlebar clamp deflecting the rush of updates and BINGO...no more buffeting/vibrating, with either my new touring screen or my now sporty chopped down OEM screen. Fair dinkum it's like riding a whole different new bike. I know we're all affected differently with our body heights but strongly recommend trying this if you suffer. Will try and post a photo. http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14...d8bac36525.jpg |
