XT125x......any good?

Hi all,

Sorry about this but I was wandering if I could pick you brains again......

My mate has just passed his CBT and plans on doing his full licensce this year. He wants a 660x when he gets his licensce, bur for now in order to gain experience etc he is looking at an xt125x. It is the blue one with gold wheels on a 08 plate I think, good condition, 1700 miles, 1450.

Im figuring that in essence, the 125 is just a 660 that has been on a uber diet. Is this the case or are the 2 totally diferent machines.

Would the 125 make it to the lakes and back? And would it survive the minor off road sections?

Are there better 125s on the market for that kinda money? Ive heard good reviews about the WR125x and also the DT125s.

Any help would be great, im hopefully going to have a look at it for him tomorrow or tuesday and give it a whirl! Cant help but think it will be kinda wierd riding that after hoofing it up there on the ten haha

Cheers all

From what I've read, the xt125 is VERY under powered - 10 bhp if memory serves. If your mate wants a machine with max legal power for a 125, get a WR125X. A bit more , but 50% more oomph. The xt125 shares almost no components from the xt660, apart from maybe light bulbs, brake/clutch levers (I think), & a few fasteners.Do not be fooled by badges!!I had a WR250X - a great bike. Really light, flickable, but just not enough power, & needed an oil change every 3k miles. Am liking the new KTM LC4 690 Duke; hopefully they will update the 690 SMC accordingly shortly. Perhaps Yamaha will come up with something even better soon??

I had a WR125X for about a year and it was a fun little machine. With a couple of mods and a new pipe you can release 'all' the power. Bear in mind that you are buying a 125 and it aint gonna be the fastest thing out there, but that baby WR is a good crack to ride and i think set me up well for the far heavier xt660. If he wants a fast 125 tell him to get a 2 smoker like an old dt125 that has been tarded or if he can afford the husky sm125 2 smoker is apparently quite quick. If he gets a WR tell him to PM me as I know some good tricks to do on them :D

Yea my thoughts were the smae about the power of the xt125x being only 10 bhp it does seem very under powered.

Im simply going to test it for him and give him an honnest oppinion. Personally allthough I love the 660's I prefere the WR125 to the XTs.

At the end of the day its his cash but hopefully I can steer him to something a wee bit more dirt cabable and cheaper haha

cheers all

I did the offroad sections last year on my 660X (my avatar picture at the moment is me on the actual off road part), from what I saw he would have no trouble at all on a 125 offroad. He may even be better off than I was, lighter etc. you cannot go fast enough with road tyres and very bumpy sections.

There was one part I had to stop and watch others first, with road tyres on I just gassed it through and it made it no problem. I think the 125 would easily make it as well.

Overall the offroad bits would be ok but its the onroad bits I would worry about. The NavXT was fantastic (I wish I had a bike at the moment), some of the hills and views were amazing, just dont know how good it would be chugging away up some of those hills we did. The 660X blitzed it all. That said the sheep were in lots of places so you had to ride with that in mind all the time.

Finally make sure whatever he gets he and it are water proof....!

Well I popped up to take a look at it today for him. I saw it, I rode it and.....I left!

The thing is almost new in condition and is useless as far as being a motorcycle is concerned. It has no poke what so ever. The whole things feels choked up with no room for improvement. The bike is also so small I could walk over the back of it and then sit down on the seat haha.

How yamaha or MDK or who ever the hell makes it nowadays could get it soooo wrong considering how good the bigger brother is!

Soo watch this space and lets see what happens!

Taa folks.

to be fair to the xt125, it would appear they make cracking delivery bikes ;)

The WR is an amazing bike in a totally different league, BUT so is the price!!!
