Hyperpro rear shock for XT660Z?
 

Hello.
I will be riding from London to KL later this year and am looking to upgrade my rear shock before I go. Something durable (I have read that Ohlins are not as sturdy/durable as some others?). Looking at Hyperpro and was wondering what peoples experience / views on them are? Reliability and durability are the main criteria. If not Hyperpro, then what would you use?

I have the rear HyperPro spring - It's not a full shock, just a progressive spring over the OE shock.

I did notice a difference when I fitted it, but, the OE one was way to soft by this time so a new OE one would have felt a whole lot better too I think. For me the HyperPro was a good move, as it was really cheap to add a little better performance.

In your shoes, I'd probably use the Nitron setup, similar to StoicBloke (or at least I think he uses Nitron!)

But then again, the OE shock, despite it's lack of adjustment, hasn't let me down.

Who ever is telling you that is a idiot,Ohlins are are as good as it gets,rather self indulgently I run 4 bikes the only one with a stock shock is the the XT,of the other 3 two have Ohlins and the other has Wilbers,the mistake folk make when comparing is check the spec against the price,some shocks are cheaper than Ohlins for no other reason they have less spec,be it separate compresion and rebound,remote reservoir or remote preload ajuster.

But I opted for the Wilbers shock on both my previous and my current Tenere. Simply because they offer better value for money. For the price of a full ohlins with external reservoir and separate compression and rebound you can get a Wilbers with external reservoir, rebound, high and low-speed compression and external hydraulic preload adjuster

Well price wise thats debatable,I've found at the same spec their the same price give or take a few �'s/Euro,you have to shop around.

But the external res/rebound/compression ajuster etc,thats all stuff that you have to strap on the bike somwhere,with the Ohlins it's all integral,hence why the majority of folk go for a combined compression/rebound on a Wilbers as it gets too messy otherwise,as you have to strap not only the preload ajuster but the remote res as well.

And hence why I've never bothered with my Wilbers having the extra res fitted on my K1200,it looks a mess among other things.

Yep. I got one. Nicely machined and put together. Very impressed so far, particularly with the damping. In fact I would go so far as to say that the damping feels more of an improvement than the spring change? The whole setup is much more controlled over the sort of undulating/rippled surfaces taken at speed that the OE setup got tied in knots with. I thought the improvements could be down to the fact that the unit is new and the old one shagged, but I had a spin on another 2011 Z with 1100 miles on it (which is for sale at a friends bike shop incidentally) as a comparison and I can safely say the difference is still very noticeable. Having had the shock set up by FTR suspension to my weight and load requirements helps too as there's now plenty of preload still available even after a test loading with camping gear and luggage. Before I had to have the preload on maximum and it was very wollowy loaded up.
