Yamaha XT logo history

ive been looking and cant seem to find any info on the origins of the black row of squares that you found on not only the tanks of the early dakar bikes, the riders clothing but even on my 09 plate tenere today. does it mean anything??

I was watchN MotoGP & they said red speedblocks was
Yamaha Japan n yellow was Yamaha America, ive always
liked the yellow n black, dats my pennies worth
