"jerkiness and surging 2004 XT-R"
I'm a new member and a new XT660R 2004 model owner . Cant get rid of the "surging" from the feul injection. I've adjusted the CO and tested it from 15 up to 20, it is much better , but its still there. Even when bike is idling , you can hear the revs dropping for a moment. Snorkel is removed and KN filter is fitted. The so called "surging" is really anoying on constant speeds. Need to sort this out. Otherwise a really nice bike. Any Suggestions?

sergeing/jerkyness..
welcome to the wonders of XT ownership.. 90% can be eliminated.. Check the cush drive rubbers ,, you want NO play in the sprocket.. Simple to sort with a old tube..(How to is posted on the site) The rubbers were responsable for most of the serge/jerking on my XTR... pete |
As petenz says as the XT 660 is a big single it gives its chain/sprockets and cush drive rubbers (rubbers in side the rear sprocket carrier) all a hard time.
First check if your cush drive rubbers are ok and the rear sprocket doesnt have too much rotational play, if it does you can either buy new cush drive rubbers, or pack the old ones out with old inner tubing. Second make sure the chain slackness is set correctly as with a slightly slack chain makes the feeling of this surging very much more noticable than if the chain slackness is seet correctly. If you still find the surging annoying you now need to start modding the fuel in/out of the bike. Youve already taken the snorkel out and changed the filter so it would be advicable to get a kev fuel mod which allows you to trick the ECU into adjust the fuelling for a better burn/feel. Or you could get a PC111 or similar but they cost and require dyno time to setup properly |
Well I have increased the CO by 10 points on my 2011 XTX and it was like getting a new bike!!! I have the same set up ie K&N filter plus snorkel removed. Try increasing another 5 on the CO?? I have just ordered a set of Leo Vince pipes plus a Kev Fuel Mod. Will let you know my progress!!

A bit more info for you guys, not all year XT660X/R's are equal.

I have the same issue with my 2004 xtx driving me mad...its either idle or high reving will look at what ECU I have as well

I paid for 2 01 ECU's when my bikes were under warranty, as the surging drove me around the bend.
I still have a very good 06 XTX/R complete wiring loom if anyone wants to convert their 07> back to a 06 XTX/R ECU with no O2 sensor. |
Kev would your fuel mod work on a 2004 xtx or is more for lambda sensors bikes? I've now found it stops surging when pulling clutch half way

It will help but with a 2004 00 ECU it's the advanced ignition timing that is partly responsible for the surging at small throttle openings, so you can add fuel & it will only help 50% to reduce the surging on the 00 ECU. With a 01 ECU + fuel mod it will reduce the surging by 95%, the other 5% is it's a big single cylinder bike. |
Got a feeling mine is 00 ECU need to have a look, but can i adjust the timing in anyway Or can it be done by a power commander?
