oil level !

morning chaps, just doing a bit of the old maintenance on the XT660r and i've over filled with oil, :013: will this cause a problem ?

How much over fill ?

Robbi 29-08-11 13:37

above the top line

From the top of my head its just under 3 litres from empty that yamaha recommend with a filter change, if you know how much you put in, just drain the right amount out, if its I little over you should be ok as its a dry sump engine, so over on dipstick is only in the holding tank so to speak, if you got a clean container just drain the lot and start again,

Or get a tube and siphon a bit out, just don't suck too hard!!

cheers guys, many thanks, a bit of tube sucking for me tonight then ! :emoticons:

Much better for your health to just undo the tank drain between the headers
Watch the front tyre if you've not opened this before, first oil change on mine covered the front tyre a, my rubbish mudguard has been cut off by previous owner

Did you run the engine or just fill it up from cold?

Robbi 30-08-11 18:45

ran the engine till warm / hot ( about 10 - 15 mins ) and the oil didn't even reach the dip stick ! put a bit in that made no difference, then a lot in that was too much !! took just on a litre

Not got the book in front of me but from what I remember it goes something like
Put 1.9 litres in, start engine for short time, add another .8 of a litre
