Engine guards/crash bars and Gilimoto tank
 

Hi everyone,

I have just purchased the Gilimoto 22L tank and I thought it would be smart to invest in some crash bars to protect it. Firstly does anyone know if the Gilimoto tank is any wider or longer than the standard fairing? Also I am after some opinions on the stength of crash bars available and whether they will protect the tank.

The only crashbars I have been able to find are SW motech, Hepco and Becker and Givi. I'm also looking at which design would make it easier to pick up the bike when it falls.

I have the tank on the way, should be here in the next week or two.

From the pics i've seen the tank looks a bit wider so hoping it will give a little protection to the rad.

I have the Hepco Becker engine bars which is up to their usual standard. I also have a B&B bash plate which I had to mod a little to fit with the engine bars.

To me this was the best and most protective set up I could find.
AS for tank protection, well i'm waiting until I get my tank and may look at making a cover.

I also have the B&B bashplate which is amazing protection. Did you have to do much modding to it to fit the bars? I was looking mainly at the HB or Givi.

I went for a ride in the natinal park the other day and dropped the bike multiple times :( but since putting on VPS barkbusters I have noticed that the fairing doesnt touch the ground when I drop it, however with the tank it probably would.

My tank is also in the mail but not expecting it for prob 3 weeks.
Are you going to install the tank yourself?

Yep those B&B bash plates are tough ******s, all but one of my bikes have them.

Ok I will have to try and find some pic's of the bash plate for you. I cut out the areas where the H&B bars go by a bit of trial and error but seems ok now.

Yes it was a bit of work using hand files to finish off, did I metion those B&B bash plates are tough haha. A dia grinder with a good cutting tip dose the job fine (wish I had that at the time).

Personaly I would go the Hepco Becker engine bars, they are easy to mount, worked in well with the B&B bash plate (with a little modding) and seem strong enough. They also angle out upwards which should cushion a fall a little.

Hoping my tank is here soon and yes will mount it myself (will let you know how easy etc it is). I will also look at rad guard etc and maybe a tank cover (yep make them to).

Have you though of fork springs upgrade to go with the tank as there will be more weight up front. I have some Wirth progressive springs on the way, will let you know how that goes to.

Cut outs for H&B engine bars on B&B bash plate

Hi there, just signed up.

Looking around for crash bars that provide protection for the tank and shrouds. So far the only ones I've found that look like possible candidates are the Touratech. As someone mentioned above, it's hard to find good info. Gerrman Touratech site has some but still nit great.
Anyone got these fitted to their XT660R and can post a couple of photos?

I ended up going for the hepco&becker crashbars. They offer great protection for the bike. The issue I had with the other brands was were they going to fit onto the bike with a B&B bashplate. Also the link you posted, I had looked at those bars as an option but when I got the gilimoto tank I didnt know if they would fit. Sorry I cant help.

Are you needing the bars for offroad protection?

Do the Hepco and Becker offer any protection to the shrouds and tank or just mainly the cases. My concern is that it appears that even a minor lie down could do a fair bit of damage to shrouds.

Whatever accessories I get will have to fit with Yamaha bash plate/sump guard, Yamaha hand guards and Yamaha luggage rack that I've already got. These probably wouldn't have been my first choice, but they were part of the deal.

One other question. When I'm looking at accessories I notice that some items (eg H&B pannier frames) offer 2 options.....up to 2006 and then 2007 and on.
Would whatever the changes that dictate that, also affect crash bars or would all years be the same?

Hope these questions make sense. I'm setting the bike up for touring on gravel roads and easier forestry tracks.

Dave the crash bars fit all years and i'm fairly sure that it works with the Yamie bash plate.

The H&B crash bars offer very good protection they angle out as they go up so a minor off should be ok for the shrouds.

My first choice would've been the B&B plate, but got the Yamaha one as part of the deal.

Now waiting on info from Touratech about crash bars (not too bad a price, given their usually scarey prices) and I'll decide between them and the H&B.

See you've got the H&B pannier frames.....thinking I might go with the Givi (to support soft bags). But I'll ask you about that later. First things first.

Dave the tank is a Gilli-Moto 22.5 ltr and was around the $500 mark with locking fuel cap to my door.
